"3 Vital Guidelines For Surviving A Violent Assault"

By: Bryan Hough

Even though most people today understand that crimes happen, but never prepare for the likelihood that they themselves will end up a crime victim. Regardless of your age, appearance, location, or lifestyle, crimes ranging from home invasions to carjackings to assaults are possibilities that you should prepare for.

Too many people take for granted that the police will defend them if they are confronted by a criminal. Honestly, unless there is a police officer in the immediate vicinity, defending yourself is up to you. In this scenario, you are your first line of defense. Here are 3 tips for ensuring your security when it comes to self defense:

1. Prepare proactively. Instead of waiting for an attack to occur, do everything you can to prepare for the possibility. Enroll in a self defense class, buy pepper spray, and think about what you would do if you were suddenly confronted by an assailant. Defend your home with better security devices. Take these steps now, instead of wishing that you had a stun gun or a personal alarm when you need it most.

2. Practice makes perfect. Once you have invested in self defense devices such as a container of pepper spray, don't put them in a drawer somewhere. Too many people think that the need to use such devices is a long ways off. If they are lucky enough to have pepper spray in their bag when somebody dangerous approaches them, they have no idea what they are doing and squander precious seconds just figuring out how to employ it. You might feel ridiculous practicing your strategies on a dummy, but this knowledge will pay off.

3. Maintain situational awareness. This does not mean being paranoid that every person on the street is out to get you, but you do need to be alert of your surroundings. Be conscious of strangers who may be approaching you, or shadowy areas where they might be hiding. If you spot something suspicious, get your stun gun or pepper spray so that you'll be ready to stave off the threat of violence.

By following these three steps, you'll be well on your way to being able to defend yourself against aggressive crimes. Always bear in mind that you must rely on yourself for protection. To put up a strong defense, be proactive, be rehearsed, and be aware. Take your safety into your own hands by planning mentally and physically for the potential of needing to protect yourself.
