"3 Vital Steps For Surviving A Violent Attack"

By: Bryan Hough

Even though most people today realize that crimes happen, but never plan for the possibility that they themselves will end up a crime target. Regardless of your age, look, location, or way of life, crimes ranging from home invasions to carjackings to assaults are possibilities that you should practice for.

Too many people take for granted that the police will protect them if they are confronted by a criminal. Honestly, unless there is a police officer in the immediate vicinity, defending yourself is up to you. In this situation, you are your first line of defense. Here are 3 tips for ensuring your safety when it comes to self defense:

1. Prepare proactively. Instead of waiting for an attack to occur, do everything you can to train for the potential. Enroll in a self defense course, buy pepper spray, and consider what you would do if you were unexpectedly confronted by an assailant. Defend your home with better defense devices. Take these steps now, instead of wishing that you had a stun gun or a personal alarm when you need it most.

2. Practice makes perfect. Once you have invested in self defense products such as a canister of pepper spray, don't leave them in a drawer someplace. Too many people believe that the need to use such products is a long ways off. If they are fortunate enough to have pepper spray in their bag when somebody dangerous approaches them, they have no idea what they are doing and waste precious seconds just figuring out how to employ it. You might feel ridiculous practicing your techniques on a dummy, but this experience will pay off.

3. Uphold situational awareness. This doesn't mean being paranoid that every person on the street is out to get you, but you do need to be conscious of your surroundings. Be aware of strangers who may be approaching you, or shadowy areas where they might be hiding. If you spot something suspicious, get your stun gun or pepper spray so that you'll be ready to stave off the threat of violence.

By following these three steps, you will be well on your way to being able to defend yourself against violent crimes. Always keep in mind that you must rely on yourself for defense. To put up a strong defense, be proactive, be practiced, and be alert. Take your safety into your own hands by preparing mentally and physically for the possibility of needing to protect yourself.
