"A Broad Abroad in Thailand"

By: Aaron R Daniel

Having scan a fair variety of books concerning expat life and experiences, I largely found them quite imbalanced and superficial. Granted, most of the authors were rather young, however in the majority of cases I used to be simply not overly impressed by them. Dodie Cross' "A Broad Abroad in Thailand" is unquestionably an exception. The author never tries to hide the actual fact that she was no spring chicken when she headed to the Land of Smiles, which certainly gives an interesting spin to her observations. We have a tendency to get to find out additional about orphanages and healthcare than we tend to do concerning beach parties and bars, that for my part is a nice improvement. Ms. Cross also nicely balances the funny-to-hilarious misadventures with more serious problems and her 'who-could-ever-understand-those-habits' moments together with her obvious admiration and respect of Thailand, its culture and its people.
Ms. Cross' memoir begins with a hasty wedding to a golf instructor, which is needed so as for her to be in a position to accompany him to his new position in Thailand. Though she is not totally certain that marrying Dick (and oh, what an acceptable name for him!) is such a nice plan, she decides to go forward with it. Their move to a replacement country is very eventful - as those moves tend to be... Terribly soon she is battling not only a badly cracking marriage to a sex addict, but also countless rules and regulations imposed by the wife of Dick's boss, the overwhelming Ms. Anorexia. Ms. Cross would rather get to grasp her new country and meet the people, however all such attempts are thought of by Ms. Anorexia as against the rules. Then along comes the near-fatal accident on the infamous Sukhumvit Highway - which really is a minimum of as unhealthy as described by Ms. Cross and a bladder surgery with unexpected results. Dick isn't thrilled by Dodie's restored virginity, the boss isn't thrilled by Dick and Ms. Anorexia is just usually not thrilled with something, particularly not with Dodie. Such is the sorry state of affairs overall, which can solely result in a lot of trouble. You'll, however, have to scan the book for yourself to be told how Dodie resolves the situation.
Having seen that Ms. Cross has conjointly lived in New Orleans among alternative places, I will undoubtedly keep an eye out for a book concerning those experiences. Per the insufficient addendum, she is already working on one about her life in Iran, so I will only hope that the New Orleans one will be next. As for "A Broad Abroad in Thailand," I found it well written and terribly enjoyable. If you need one thing to decorate your day, just browse one in all the funnier chapters, maybe the one about mastering the use of Thai bathrooms or the joys of buying underwear in a strange country. You may feel thus grateful that you do not have to accommodate any of this that your day can immediately improve. Nice browse for expats, expats-to-be, wanna-be- expats, travelers and simply concerning anybody else with a way of humor.
