Congrats on your decision to learn Spanish! One great thing, the Spanish language is not hard to learn. Even if you are someone who has trouble learning languages; Spanish is such a dominant language today, and there are plenty of methods to use that will make your learning process easier. You should hire a tutor. No question, CDs and books can be very good. But a tutor can answer questions that often times a CD/book cannot.There's nothing wrong with a CD, or book. However a tutor can provide the kind of help you may not receive from a book/CD. Naturally, a language tutor should be fluent in the language they're tutoring. A good tutor can teach you various dialects in the language of instruction.

If you'll be visiting a country where Spanish is spoken, it's a good idea to learn the local dialect to you'll be able to communicate better. What's important is that a tutor will help you to understand the casual use of certain words. Also, CDs and books tend to be more formal. But a tutor can teach you the slang words.

As you listen to Spanish, pay close attention to what is being spoken. This will improve your 'hearing' for it. Many languages are more oral-based than written. If the language is 'alive,' then it will be important to learn how to listen to it. Knowing how to correctly write a sentence or the alphabet will produce limited results. You need to be able to understand the language when you hear it. The best way to do this is to listen to as much of your chosen language as possible. You will know you're on the right track when you can identify your language after hearing a few spoken words.
