2 Simple ways to prevent hard drives from overheating

Although hard drives are an excellent storage device, they are not perfect by any means. Failures in hard drive is a universal problem in all computers and there's no way you can prevent it from happening. There are many reasons why a hard drive fail, one of the most common one is overheating. Viruses and crashes are also common along with it is identity theft and deletion accidents of essential hard drive files.
Old hard drives' style and mechanics was low in RPM. In other words, they would not overheat. However, the hard drives that we are using today have a speed of 7,200 to 10,000 RPM, meaning they can get hot once they start working. But no need to worry because our computers today comes with a fan and temperature sensors to keep everything cool and to keep you track of how hot your hard drives are.
Hard drives of today are very prone to overheating. The faster they are, with a usual speed of 10,000 RPM, the more susceptible they are to overheating.Their temperature can increase as hot as 70 degrees F. The inside mechanics of hard drives are built to withstanding hear, but if things get to hot and hard drives are saturated, you are in trouble. If that situation comes, hard drives end up losing important data and no matter how good your data specialists maybe, you still end up losing lots of valuable information.
An area in your hard drive that is heavily affected by overheating is the platters. They are your hard drive's magnetic media. they carry all the data throughout the hard drive. Platters are made from optical glass, aluminum/ceramic and usually covered with one layer of magnetic material. What normally happens is, when hard drives begin to heat up, the platter expand. This will result to a change in their size where the magnetic surface will most likely be destroyed. Hence, loss of data. Worst case is, if the platters get permanently damaged, it will end up unreadable.
Other parts of your hard drive that can be damaged from overheating are the head actuator, the read and write heads, and the controller chip. Hard drives are very complex gadgets, they are very delicate and simply cannot manage overheating. One example would be the read and write heads. Once these become damaged, they cannot become useless components.
The best way to prevent hard drives from overheating is to make sure that they are in the right temperature. Always see to it that they are well ventilated and cooled properly. A preventive action would be to get additional fans and coolers. They will dramatically improve the flow of air and ventilation of your computer. These add ons are very affordable, easily accessed in your nearest computer hardware shops and is an ideal investment to keep your computer system properly working.
Another way to make sure that your hard drives are properly cooled is to get software that monitors the temperature of hard drives. Either way, you must always ensure that your hard drives are kept cool. By doing that, you will prevent your hard drives from crashing not to mention maintaining the stability of your system - ensuring a secure, stable and properly working computer.
