3 Myths About A Career In Writing

Do you dream of a career in writing? Many people do. They dream of sitting on a park bench somewhere, typing away, wonderfully relaxed and at ease. They dream of earning big pay-checks and seeing their photographs grace the cover of the next best-seller. They imagine themselves being interviewed by Oprah, answering her questions about how they ever dreamt up such a fantastic storyline. However, the real truth is that a career in writing is not easy to perfect. In this article are three myths about a freelance career in writing that you should know about BEFORE you quit your day-job.

Myth Number 1. A freelance career in writing is glamorous. Certainly, having your name in print is wonderful. Knowing that others are reading YOUR works is exhilarating. However, the actual writing part is FAR FROM EXCITING. Experiencing "writers block" is a nightmare. Working with editors who wish to chop up your delicately crafted efforts is painful. Getting your writing name well established is tricky and stressful... let alone more challenging than you might ever imagine.

Myth Number 2. A career in writing is something that ANYONE could have. Even though there are thousands of writing jobs online that you might find if you did a quick search engine query the fact is that if you wish to make a decent wage, you will have to a) be a a writer better than most, b) know all about MARKETING your work, c) work more than you thought you would, d) learn to accept criticism very well, AND e) know how to locate the highly paid jobs.

Myth Number 3. A freelance career in writing means writing articles or novels... and that's all. Incorrect. Utterly so. Although writing non-fictional books, articles, or novels are perhaps the most common ways to earn money with your writing, there are numerous other ways. Sports writing, blogging, and writing website content, just to name a handful.

A career in writing does have great appeal to people who love working with words. Just be fore-warned that for lots of people it's not the dream job that they are probably picturing.
