3 Tips to Create Effective Email Subject Lines

By: Jim Zimmermann

Email marketing is an extremely powerful marketing method, but it'll only work if people open your emails, read them, and take action. So that is why we're here today; we'll share some proven subject line writing tips that hopefully you can use and profit from.

Think of your subject line as a headline, where you have to grab the prospect's attention no matter what. Your subject line is not just another line in which you can write whatever you want, especially if your goal is e-mail marketing. This is why you need to outline a major benefit in your subject line so that the receiver understands what to expect from the mail. All of the e-mails you send out should illustrate a major benefit or your unique selling position. Getting your email read by your subscribers can be a daunting task if you don't give them a reason to do it.

Every single person you send an e-mail to is going to want to know what kind of motivation they should feel to open your letters. This is the exactly why many email marketers fail in the first place. These guys try to compose a mysterious subject line to show that there is something hidden inside the mail but it needs to be the opposite. There will be some times when you'll have to write your subject line so that it catches a person's interest but your USP should always be clearly explained. You need to spend time on your subject line because it is what will decide whether or not your e-mail gets opened.

Having a lot of people open your mail does not automatically mean that your subject line was good. This won't mean that your main goals are accomplished and that the mails are going to start converting. Subscribers are known for opening mails for no real reason so don't assume that an opened mail is going to lead to a sale.

Some subscribers will simply delete the mail as soon as they open it so make sure to measure the click through rate on your links as well as the rate at which your mails are opened. This should give you a good idea of what is working and what is not.

When you're writing your subject line, it is important to keep it in sync with the "from" line. This is because there's a lot of spam going around on the Internet and people want to be sure of who they are receiving their email from.

This should raise your "open" rates because it takes away the worry about who is actually sending the e-mail to the people on your list. Once in a while subscribers forget which lists they have opted in to so you need to help them connect your name with your subject line. So what we're trying to do, and what you need to do, is to help you get the best responses and open rates in your email marketing. Achieving that is based entirely on your ability to learn how to write killer subject lines. You will improve with more learning and most importantly, doing.
