3rd Party Credit Card Processors - Looking Beyond the Bank for Better Deals

By: Roberto Garabell

Traditionally, banks have played a major role in credit card processing. It is not tough to speculate the reason. Banks are where merchants have had accounts usually for years and it was relatively easy to sell credit card processing to existing account holders. Their merchant accounts could be easily linked with point of sale machines and the bank kept a small percentage of the money moved, thus developing a new source of revenue for themselves.

Of late however, banks have been losing their dominance to third party credit card processing companies. This is not accidental. 3rd party credit card processors have been gaining ground since they have offered better pricing that is backed by great customer service. Banks were under the assumption for a long time that since the merchant account was held by them, were entitled to sell every other service related with merchant funds. They did not understand that the customer is always searching for the best deal and they abandon you if your competition is offering better rates and service.

It is inappropriate to assume that customer desires a one stop shop for financial services. What they do prefer is that their needs be met in the most proficient and inexpensive manner. They don't care whether they get the best deal at a single place or have to source it from multiple vendors. This is where the banks were edged out by third party processors. Their mantra was simple but powerful - come to us for a better offering at a lower price, and it worked!

This business proposition was profoundly facilitated by the coming of internet. It altered all norms of the business world. Thanks to inexpensive and quality connectivity provided by internet, third party credit card processing companies are able to process credit cards correctly and inexpensively. Servicing even smaller merchants became viable without charging them exorbitant rates. Earlier, such service was offered only by large banks, now several technically savvy outfits which provide if not more but equal value have come up to service the merchants.

We cannot deny that getting all financial services at a single point is convenient. It saves a lot of time and effort otherwise spent in organization. However, equally important is cost consideration. Businesses would be keen on furthering their relationship with the bank especially if they have had their accounts with them for years. But they would want to get a good deal as well. It is important to point out the other key service areas as well in addition to rates and charges: internet processing, no signature processing etc.

The third party credit card processing companies are playing a valuable role. They assist businesses negotiate better with their banks. Banks are no longer complacent due to the strong competition and are changing their modus operandi to take new competitors head on. Eventual beneficiary is the consumer - the business owner, regardless of who they choose to partner with, they get the best deal.
