5 Tips To Get Listed On Dmoz

By: David Henderson

In this article, I will be giving a few tips on "How To Maximize Your Changes Of Accepation in DMOZ". As I was in the past editor myself, listen to my advise, it didn't change a lot since I left.
DMOZ is known as the most powerful one-way link that any site can get for free but unfortunately it is also known as the hardest directory to get in.
DMOZ has like all other site its rules and if you follow them then there is no reason you won't get listed in there and enjoy the "SEO juice" of the strongest link of the world.
Take the time to find the right category
One thing that is obvious in the The Open Directory Project (DMOZ) is the high number of different categories.
At the day of today, here are DMOZ number's : 4532616 sites - 84808 editors - over 590000 categories.
The choice of the right category is the first step in a "quality submission" with all the features of an accepted submission.
It's understandable that with over 590000 categories, there is a bit a research to do as many of the categories are almost identic, but every one has it's own, very precise, relevance and if you submit to the wrong category, you blow your chances of being accepted.
Submit your site ONCE only
Here is what I would place at the second position in terms of mistakes made leading at the non-approval of a site : the submission of the same site multiple times.
If you want to get in, do not submit more than ONCE to the ODP. Many submit their listing multiple times, some, even, regularly !
Once you selected the right category, submit your site once and forget about it ! Don't worry, it is now in the Big Machine (Dmoz database) and will be reviewed at 100%. Submitting more than once is not only totally useless, it is also a way to delay your review of month, sending it back at the end of the queue. Be patient, it usually takes a few month for a listing to be reviewed.
Capitalize every first letter of every word
Something that so many of you didn't see is that on every listing, the title (the blue "clickable" part of the listing) has every first letter of each word capitalised and adding a capital letter to every word of the title is something that will guide you to the acceptation in DMOZ.
The title of your website is your URL
Another "detail" : have a look at the words composing the title of all the listings present in the OPD/DMOZ... You see what it is exclusively made of ? The answer is that it is exclusively made of words present in the website's URL and nothing else.
Keep your description short without any form of advertising
I recommend you to look at the listing's descriptions already present and to choose one that has a form that could be used for your site and to respect perfectly its structure, just changing it a minimum to make it unique.

When having a close look, the recipe of a succesful submission to the Open Directory Projec/DMOZ is procedure that follows very strict and precise rules.
By respecting them at the letter, you will succeed and get your site listed at the first try.
