6-8 Weeks Before Moving

By: Remington Moving

Organization is the key for a smooth move and 6-8 weeks before the move date is the time to start preparing for your move. It is the time to take a look at what you own, and decide what must go and what can be left behind. All items such as old books, magazines, broken items, old toys can be left behind. Don't fret about workable items you wish to leave behind. You can either donate them to a local charity or sell them at a neighborhood sale. If you are giving your items to charity be sure to call several weeks before moving day, so they will have time to schedule a pickup. Supplie Decide if you are going to purchase your moving supplies from the moving company or provide them yourself. If you want to pack yourself, begin collecting packing supplies right away. If you want to purchase moving supplies from the mover, large companies such as Remington will deliver the boxes and moving supplies, at a fair price, right to your door. All boxes that you purchase from a self storage or a moving supply company are specially designed for the moving industry to prevent any damages to your belongings. Getting boxes from other sources may create some difficulties when packed in our trucks or storage facility. These boxes may be unusual sizes and they may not be strong enough to prevent damage to items packed inside. Start now to plan the layout and design of the furniture arrangement at your new home. Have a complete floor plan ready, to remove the stress of making quick decisions when your furniture arrives. Plan on taking all important documents, such as wills, stock certificates, and other one of a kind items (jewelry, coin collection, photos etc.). During this period, make arrangements to transfer your insurance, including medical, property, fire and auto to your new city. take time to read up on your new home. Get information about schools and programs for your children, as well as parks and recreation services. All travel arrangements (hotel, flights, car rental, etc.) for your family should be made at this time. Try to keep your plan flexible as possible to accommodate any schedule changes or delays. Importent: Keep all receipts for moving related expenses in a designated moving folder. Many moving expenses are tax deductible. Obtain an IRS Change of Address form, Form 8822, by calling (800) 829-1040 or visiting the IRS website (www.irs.gov). You will be able to download and print form 8822 and most other IRS tax forms; e.g., Form 3903 to help deduct moving expenses.
