64 Gigabyte static hard disk

By: Roberto Garabell

SanDisk, the inventor of Solid State Drives (SSD for short) now brings you the 64 Gigabyte SSD. In case you didn't know, SSDs are far more desirable than normal HDDs, especially when talking about laptops. And that's because SSDs have no moving parts so they wear out slower and they can't break that easy. Besides they use far less power, 1.0 watt compared with 1.9 watts for a HDD.

The main problem with SSDs until now was the relative low storage space, but now with the 64GB drive from SanDisk that's not a problem anymore. Laptop producers will be happy to incorporate the new 2.5" and 1.8" SSDs since they offer 100 times faster data access speed using half the power. For example, the 2.5" uses 1.0 watt of power and can access data with an average speed of 0.11 milliseconds compared to average HDDs that use 1.9 watts when active and can access data at a speed of 17 milliseconds.

The 32GB version of the 2.5" and 1.8" SSDs are already out and SanDisk says it will release 64GB samples in the third quarter and they will also provide mass production before the end of the year.
