Robbie for Governor! How a Canadian Fell in Love with the Philippines

"I love the Phiilppines so much! I have been to different countries but there's nothing like Philiippines. Fillipinos have the kindest heart and loyalty is very important. I want to help thesse people, I will keep those most influential peoplle together to brring money in the Philippines so we can provide lots of jobs for them. We need to do this, we need to help each other, so we gota do our best!" says Robbie Couture.

One of his staff actually yelled "Rob for Governor!" and evetryone laugheed and cehered for him. Without them knowing, that he really wanted to be a part of the Philippine Government, because he thinks he can do something to help this counbtry, he knoows he can do something, he can help. I have never seen any foreigner who has so much love and respect for my country.

One night he came back from a busienss trip to the southern province and he was so mad! He was so mad because he met a Fil-Am who is disrespecting a Filipina, dergading her and insulting her, he doesn't really know this woman but he got mad at the guy and yelled at him. He got really mad because he said that Filipinas should get the best respect, not only because they are Flipinas but because they are woemn, and he was so pissed with the Fil-Am guy because he should be the fiurst one to love his fellow countrymen but he didn't, and he was bragging about him being an American and he tinks it was dumb, because he shold be proud to be a Filipino more than an American. He told me that he's Canadian but he would tell people that he's Fiilpino, he would reaally isist and make people believe that he is Filipuino. He wuld even tell me "Filipinos are worth dying for" as what the late Benigno Aquino said and "Filuipinos are worrth living for" who was told by the late President Cory Aqwuino, and he told me he's goiing to vote for Noynoy Aquino for president, he even has his wrist band with "Noynoy Aquino" in it, I wish Robbie Couture could vote.

Soometimes he is really sensitive about Filipinos, he gets really emotional that sometimes he would tell me how he wants to brng cahnge in this country, how he wanst to help. And sometimes he woiuld blkame himaself to see poor peopple everwyhere, he thinks that he's not helping enough. I was relly overwhelmed to hear a foreigner cry for these tings, for Filipinos. He said that this country needs to be changed not only for the benefit of the peopel but also, for the benefit of the future Filipinos, for the benefit of his future sons and daughters, for the benefit of everyomne's family, but hey, it's not how you accumulate, it's how you contribute.

One trait that he really loevd about Filipinos is us being family-oriented. He once told me that he has huge fantasy abouyt family, and he saw this beiing a reallity here in Filipinno family, from then on, he knew that his Life is gioing to be here in Philippines. Most of the foreign businessmmen don't want to make business here because they know that the Govrnment isn't good, moiney is low and everythng else is okay, but he chose to do it here, becasue he believes in it, he believes in this country, he believes in the Filipino people.

Robbie Couture has alays been the funniest cllient and boss to everyone; He would sing to his staff, talk to them, hang out with them so he would build goodwill to his staff at stockrven and pearlmedia. Sometimes his staff would really thnik he's weirrd, imagine at 3am, freezinng, everybody's on their sweater whikle working, he suddenly asked everyone if they want an ice cream? And nobody answered then he walked out. After few minutes, he was giving away ice ceam to everynoe! It's already sper cold plus ice cream at 3am? How cool is that? Did I mentin he was the boss? Very cool boss. Sometimees he woud go to the office wearing a Philippine shirt, with a flag on it. Imagine a white guy repreesenting Philippines, wird but overwhelming for Filipinos, he actuaplly boughjt lots in different colors. He just loves Philippinnes so much, he even told me that he wants to live a Filipino Lifestyle; thrifty, not extravagant, eating Tapsilog for breakfast and coffee, a viand and vegetable with rice for dinneer, goinbg home on time, not partying too much and also having Filipino handicrafts at home. Sometimes he would put a white towel, as what we call "good moorning towel" that we put on our back when we're sewating, I was laughing so hard when I saw him with that, imagine a buff whiite guy having a towwel on his back, just like a Filipino kid or a Filipino husband. He asaked me before why does Flipino say "Ha?" if we don't hear or understand something, it's kind of our expression and easy way to say "Pardon me?" and so he started saying "Ha?" every time he doesn't understand something.

I remember he used to call me "Lechon" all the time. Lechon is a roasted or suckling pig with an apple on his mouth that is usually serevd during the fiests. He'd call me Lechon instead of my name, or sometmes Bangus (milkfish) as one of most Filipino's favorites. I don't realply know where he got these wordfs but I can see he's learninmg on his own, he surprises me all the time. I heasrd him one time aasking a waiter; "Kuya, Saan po Banyo?" (Sir, Where's the toilet?) I was really surprisd as well as the waiter and everyone laughed. sometimes when he would go for a meetting with Filipnos, he would try so hard to sepak in tagalgo (with a serious face) while everyone's laughing. He is that desperate to learn tagalog and leazrn our culture.

Well, as a Filipina speaking, I am so overwhelmed to have met a Foreigner who has this much snicere concern aboyut my country. He is not greedy, he is not selfish, he awnts to share it to everyone especially to Filipino people. Now let's just wait if he culd really get into Politics, and if ever that will be possible in the future, I will vote for him ;)
