A Gumball Machine for Your Kids

By: William Carpenter

Thirty five years ago when I was growing up my grandad brought a gumball machine home. My two brothers and I were told to see what grandpa had purchased. I remember how excited we were when we first saw the heap of gumballs almost whispering to us from on the inside of the machine. To this day I still believe that 1 or 2 of them might really have spoken to me.

Grandfather gave us all a coin and told us to put it in the gumball machine. We were giddy with amusement as we placed the coin into the machine and turned the crank. Our faces were ready to explode with anticipation as we waited to see which color gumballs would be waiting behind that tiny door.

We all smashed the gumballs into our mouth with little concern to what those colors actually were. Our grandad observed with a smile on his face. He then asked us to sit down because he needed to tell us about the gumball machine.

The Gumball Machine Rules

Our grandpa set up some rules for the gumball machine. He told us we were not supposed to play with it without either him, my grandmom or Dad or Mom. The change we used had to be coins we earned from being good and doing our chores. He also told us we were not supposed to eat gum before eating.

The policies were rather straightforward. We understood them and nothing was going to get in our way from getting gumballs.

How a Gumball Machine Made us Listen

We knew the fastest way to be informed we could not get gum out of the gumball machine was if we did not listen to our parents. Our parents knew that all of us really wanted gumballs. They would remind us whenever we did not listen the first time they said something that they'd tell Grandad we misbehaved. This almost always lead to a rapid turn in our actions.

Our parents gave us errands that would earn us some change for the gumball machine. Looking back on it, our allowance was most likely below minimum wage although the statute of limitations for a lawsuit might have passed. We were more focused on the quantity of gumballs we got instead of how much change we were being paid.

The gumball machine was ultimately passed down to my dad and continues to be in the family. Each time I glimpse, it I smile.

A New Gumball Machine

I have started searching on the internet for a gumball machine for my home. It’s going to be both a way for me to recreate with my children what our grandpa did for me and my siblings in addition to being a reminder of something wonderful from my adolescence.

I see how my kids’ eyes light up after they glimpse a gumball machine and the longing look they will give us. They practically will us to have a nickel in our pocket that we'll give them so they can purchase a gumball.

We favor the big gumballs in my family. The children all want the red and blue gumballs when they buy them from a machine. I want to fill up the gumball machine with just red and blue gumballs. Maybe I will put in some white gumballs for Fourth of July, after all we want to be patriotic!

A gumball machine is a large part of my childhood and I want to let my children enjoy the same lessons I learned thanks to a very clever grandpa and a gumball machine.
