A Walt Disney Retrospective

By: Roberto Garabell

Fairytales are an integral part of any child's upbringing. Little girls especially love the thought of being a princess saved by a gallant Prince Charming. Characters such as Snow White, Cinderella, and Beauty from Beauty and the Beast, have captured the imaginations of young and old alike. The stories, even though centuries old, never seem to get tired. Walt Disney, through animation, brought many of these fabled stories to life on screen. Children can now watch their favorite fairy tale on DVD at home and relive the stories through the animated characters.

Expanding the Imagination
Walt Disney was not only a creator of legendary characters such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. He also managed to create wonderfully life-like characters for age-old stories such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Characters such as Sleepy, Grumpy and Sneezy were all given unique personalities and voices in the animation. The small quirks like Sleepy dozing off continuously or Grumpy sitting in a sulk has brought much amusement to audiences over the years. The animators that worked with Disney had a talent for bringing characters to life in a way that really engaged with the audience. Most often, it was not what the characters said but the expressions on their faces or their body language that brought the most laughs.

It's not only human characters that have been brought to life through Disney's animations. His most famous characters, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck for example, where fragments of Walt Disney's imagination before he breathed animated life into them. In modern animations, elaborately choreographed scenes include song and dance by plants and trees, cups and saucers, and a whole range of unusual objects. Sometimes Disney's animations have been described as a carnival of color, expanding the imagination and creating a fairytale within a fairytale with the different characters.

Introducing Song and Dance
A further characteristic of Walt Disney's animated films was the introduction of music and dance into the stories. Beautiful solo's and choruses create much of the onscreen magic of Disney's animated films. The dwarfs little ditty of "Hi, Ho, Hi, Ho, it's off to work we go…" has even been turned into a modern day office joke: "I owe, I owe, it's off to work I go…" It's at times like this that the extent of Disney's influence seems to become apparent. The theme tune from Disney's Three Little Pigs "Who's afraid of the big bad wolf" became a tune synonymous with overcoming hardships during the depression years.

So many of the tunes associated with favorite fairytales have been created by Disney's creative teams. In modern day animations of fairytales, leading songwriters and artists have been brought into the mix and produced major chart hits. One such example is the theme song from the animated production of Beauty and the Beast. Another example is Elton John's Can you feel the love tonight, the hit song used in Disney's production of the Lion King.

Memories of Disney
The Disney Corporation is now a multi-billion dollar industry, yet they have managed to maintain many of their core values, such as the importance of family and creativity. The association of Disney is one of strong family values, looking after friends and family and caring for your community. The ethic of creativity and using imagination to develop new ideas is one strongly associated with Disney. It's no wonder then that mementos from Disneyland are greatly valued. Many of the characters are looked up to by children as heroes. Think of Snow White's kind heart or the Little Mermaid's creativity. Granted, these characters originated in age-old European fairytales but Disney's clever marketing and superb animated films of the stories have meant that their depiction of the characters are often the one's most easily recognized.

Disney souvenirs range from soft toys and figurines to all sorts of kiddy paraphernalia. You can get mugs and bowls which kids just love. A recent product line has been developed especially for little princesses. Most little girls love playing dress up and often will choose their fairytale character to imitate. Enamel, silver and gold trinkets are now available to make the little ladies feel even more like princesses. The nice thing about these jewelry items is that they are lovely keepsakes. They can be used as gifts for special occasions such a birthdays or celebrating a ballet recital performance. Imagine the delight at having a "real" Snow White ring to show off to friends at school.
