Acoustic Starter Guitars - 4 Ideas To Getting A Better First Guitar

By: Kevin Riley

Getting your first acoustic starter guitar is a huge decision and it's one that is easy to get wrong.I've made bad decisions when shopping for guitars and I'd like to help if you are considering a starter acoustic guitar for the 1st time.

My first guitar was a gift from my Dad after I was 16. It was a giant body, no name acoustic guitar with an electric pickup that he'd purchased from a guy he worked with. I do not know why he thought it could be a good idea as I'd not asked for one and hadn't shown any interest in any form of instrument previously. He had no way of knowing the huge and life long changes it would make for me when he purchased it. I'm 50 now and looking back on a love affair with guitars that has lasted all my grownup life.

I didn't have a clue the way to tune or play it at first. All I knew was that I REALLY liked it. Strumming some casual strings and enjoying the way it sounded was an introduction to a world of music. I played for a few hours each night time to start with or till my fingers bled whichever came soonest. I had chosen the world's worst guitar tutor - me! If only I had known a bit of what I know now when I started with my acoustic guitar.

For a start I would not have gotten the music guide I did. It was quaint and stuffed with outdated songs that did nothing for me emotionally. Tip no 1 - concentrate on what you enjoy. Learn to play the sort of songs that you take pleasure in. If in case you have a favourite band play their music. It should make the experience a joy instead of a chore. There is a huge quantity of good music avaiable for purchase or downloaded from the internet at no cost that you will never have an opportunity to play more than a tiny fraction of it.

Once I had a few of the basics below my belt I fancied trying a different guitar and set off to my local second hand shop with a hard earned £25 in my excited little hands. I bought the largest, reddest guitar that they had just because it appeared so damn sexy! The action on the guitar (the gap between the strings and the fretboard) was huge. It made it very difficult to play and everything was much harder because of it. Tip no 2 - get a guitar that sounds as good as it looks. Buying a guitar is very like buying a automobile in that we purchase it emotionally. We fall in love with the way it looks before we ever drive it. If you don't know enough about guitars to choose one that 'feels' right in addition to sounding good take somebody with you who does. If you don't know anyone like that do a little homework before you buy. There are plenty of guitar magazines and review site online that should provide you with a good idea about the numerous manufacturers and models available.

Some Guitarists will let you know you can play any song with only 3 chords and there's some truth in that. Learning a number of easy chords to get you started may be very important. Remember that horrible music book I purchased? It held me back for years. Tip no three - get some tuition. If you know someone with a guitar get them to spend a bit of time with you. Study some primary chords and strumming. This will move you ahead far better and quicker than making an attempt to learn on your own. I would advocate guitar classes except you want to find the appropriate teacher. A bad trainer can put you off music for life. A good trainer will be able to recognise where you need help and how best to practise.

Tip no 4 - and maybe the most important is purchase the best guitar you can afford. Learning to play is difficult enough with out having to struggle with an inexpensive no-name guitar as well. Too many people decide to buy a cheap guitar not knowing if they will stick with it and afraid that they will waste the money. A good high quality guitar will get you off to the best start. It will be a lot easier to play, sound a lot better and stay in tune longer. Bear some of these tips in mind when buying a starter acoustic guitar and you'll stand a a lot better likelihood of learning the instrument and it will provide you with a lifetime of pleasure in return.
