Activate Routing On Ports On Windows Server 2k3

By: Mohamed Ahmed Ouamer

In this article you'll learn how to activate routing on ports on Windows Server 2003 operating system. To accomplish this, just perform these actions:

Step 1: Open Routing and Remote Access MMC (Microsoft Management Console).

Step 2: In the tree structure of the console, click on Routing and Remote Access

Step 3: Click on the name of your Server.

Step 4: Click on Ports.

Step 5: Click with the right button of your mouse on Ports, and then click on Properties.

Step 6: Under the tab "Devices", click on the device that you need to set up, and then click on Configure.

Step 7: In the dialog box "Configure Device", select the options of connection that you want to activate for the device, and then click on OK.

Step 8: Click on Apply.

Keep in mind that on Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition, and Windows Server 2003, Web Edition, you can create up to 1,000 PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) ports and up to 1,000 L2TP (To bush-hammer Two Tunneling Protocol) ports. On the other hand, Windows Server 2003, Web Edition, can accept only one VPN (virtual
Private Network) connection at the same time. Moreover, Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition, can accept up to 1,000 simultaneous VPN sessions. If 1,000 VPN customers are connected, the additional VPN attempts will be refused as much as the number of active VPN connections does not go down below 1,000.

Take into account that you should be a member of the Administrators group in order to execute the following procedure. It is suggested to right-click the Routing and Remote Access icon and then click on Run As option rather than to open a Windows session using the credentials of a member of the Administrators group. If you opened a session with identification information of a member of the Administrators security group, you can also open the Routing and Remote Access MMC (Microsoft Management Console) by double-clicking on Routing and distant access located in the Administrative Tools folder, which you can it by clicking on Start and then click on Control panel.

The CCNA exam is not an easy exam, and I suggest you to purchase one CCNA study guide from the ones available on the market and purchase a CCNA lab workbook to pass you exam and build up your routing and switching skills.
