Activision?s Take On Transformers: The Cybertronian Optimus Prime

By: Dara Morales

The most up-to-date installment in the Transformers saga hit retailer shelves on June 22, 2010 ? as a movie game, that is. Activision?s take on the Transformers story line concentrates on what may be regarded as a pre-quel of sorts, or an origin tale of how the head of the Autobots rose to his revered position.

Prime Before His Time

Enthusiasts of the Transformer?s animated show in the eighties, and by extension Hollywood?s newest version from the tale, will immediately discover the distinction in the new/young Cybertronian Optimus Prime. For beginners the video game?s story is set on the transformer?s home planet, Cybertron, ravaged by the battle between Decepticons and Autobots.

Instead of the conventional big-rig Optimus Prime, Activision decided to provide the leader of the Autobots a different alternative form compared with what enthusiasts are accustomed to seeing. The ?younger? prime takes the shape of an armored vehicle mounted with cannon prepared to blast.

Origin Of A Hero

The plot of War for Cybertron takes place well before the Autobots come into contact with people and in a sense fills in storyline holes observed in the 1980s animation show which began the Transformers saga. Optimus Prime?s mission in the video game is to rally the Autobots to save planet Cybertron from Megatron as well as the Decepticons given that the head of the Autobots, Zeta Prime, is reported to have fallen in battle.

The Cybertronian Optimus Prime becomes, in some sense, pushed into a situation of command to test his mettle. Rather than the confident, powerful director observed from the tv show and big-dollar silver screen production, Activision?s portrayal of Optimus Prime centers around the hefty load and sacrifice of leadership. You could say that Optimus Prime, like a young, novice general, is promoted before he is prepared.

Prime On New Platforms

The main core of Transformer followers, at the end of the day, most probably will continue to be devoted to the franchise and purchase into the video game?s storyline. Activision, to see to it that followers do, has licensed the War for Cybertron on all video game platforms like Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Nintendo?s Wii and DS.

So far both the video game and action figures have received fine ratings from buyers, but in all fairness, a lot of Transformer hardcores say the video game play in the game itself simply leaves something to be desired. Overall, Activision?s most current take on Optimus Prime works properly.
