Advice From a Pest Expert on Killing Roaches

By: Dovid Davis

Yesterday, I talked with David Davis, the Director of A # 1 Pest Control of Maryland, and asked him if he would talk about how to get rid of raoches. We'll he said, the first thing you need to do is go out to a store and look over the various types of pest sprays, and then I can tell you which ones are good and which ones aren't. David, I said, it's 11:30 at night, and I'm trying to write an article about roaches. Just tell me what to write about and I'll figure out from the article what I need to do to get rid of my roaches. So he agreed.

David described for me the different breeds of roaches we see around the home. The most common is the German roach. German roaches are usually small and brown. They are found in kitchens, and they breed every 28 days. Next most common is the American roach. Unlike the German roach, the American roach is attracted to dry places, and therefore, is found on your household furniture. The American roach can also fly. Oriental cockroaches are big and black, and you see them in sewers. They can grow to as large as 2 inches.

David said that to get rid of roaches, you have to spray. The ability of the spray to work hinges on its effectiveness. Professional strength American insecticides, for example, will render a domicile bug free for up to 3-4 months. Pesticides in other countries, which are stronger, and which stick to surfaces better, will render a house roach free for as long as a year. But you can also kill roaches with commercial sprays such as Raid. The problem is they will only work for a couple of weeks and then the Roaches come back and then you will have to spray again.

The ability of chemicals in sprays to stick to surfaces is one determinant of the sprays effectiveness because roaches lick themselves clean. When they walk across an area that has been sprayed, the poison will adhere to their bodies. When they subsequently lick themselves, they ingest the poison and die. David told me a disgusting fact about roaches, they are cannibals. So when a roach dies from ingesting pesticide spray, and days later another roach comes by and eats his comrade, then he will die also. A just fate for a cannibal!

David noted that you can also kill roaches with poisons that are compounded in forms other than sprays, such as tablets, or powders, only they take a lot longer to work.

Another important factor, David noted is treating all the proper locations. Specifically, roaches like to bread in dark hidden damp crevices. So to kill the roaches, you have to spray in those areas as well, or you can seal them off with putty.

Boric acid can also kill roaches, although it takes several weeks. To be effective, it must be spread everywhere that roaches walk. This can be quite messy, and David suggested that the substance can also be mixed with water and sprayed out of a windex bottle. If you use boric acid this way, David noted, you must be careful to spray it into the crevices and holes where the roaches breed.

Well, if boric acid can be so effective, what is the need of using a pest specialist, I asked David. It takes a lot of time to mix up the boric acid solution and spray it into all the right places he told me. And then again, it's not as rapid acting as the roach sprays.

Well thanks for taking the time to read this report, and I wish you a pest free day.
