As a psychiatrist that treats a lot of addiction, I have worked with a variety of families in that the husband is married to an alcoholic wife. When children are concerned, the impact of having an alcoholic mom is tremendous. Recently, alcoholic moms have been getting more media exposure. Women alcoholics have different issues than men with an alcohol problem.

C.L. could be a forty five year-previous mom that has been drinking for over 15 years. Her alcohol consumption has gotten progressively worse over the last five to seven years. She has been to rehab twice and relapsed after treatment within a short amount of time. She worked as a legal secretary for years, however determined to remain home when her boys were young. Her husband tells me he will divorce her if she will not stay clean and sober.

Her husband is tired of returning home to seek out her passed out on the couch. Her teenage sons are too embarrassed to ask anyone over. One among them told me that she has gotten "plastered" at many of his baseball games. He desires she wouldn't come to his games any more. C. L. has been married twice. Her 1st marriage ended because of her alcohol problem and currently she is facing the likelihood of losing her second marriage. She feels totally ashamed about her drinking, however additionally is unsure if she will offer up alcohol.

C. L. is an example of an alcoholic mom/alcoholic wife. She felt stressed from her initial divorce and self medicated her feelings of depression with alcohol. Throughout her second marriage, she felt pressure balancing her work and residential life. She started drinking alcohol to deal with the stress. She eventually gave up working to be together with her boys and conjointly to relieve stress. However, now and then she felt bored and isolated being a keep-at-home mom and he or she started drinking more alcohol. She conjointly felt overwhelmed now and then chauffeuring her 2 kids to all their sports games and when college activities. Over time, her brain has become alcohol dependent.

Her marriage is on the rocks as a result of of her alcohol problem. In flip, her marital stress contributes to her drinking more alcohol. It is a vicious cycle.

Ladies alcoholics feel more shame than alcoholic men. Your alcoholic wife has been drinking as a result of she is dissatisfied at some level and will not understand how to fill the "void" or ask for help. She desperately wants help. Alcoholism, if untreated, might finish in death. You should know that girls respond higher to getting help for his or her alcohol problem if you're willing to urge help for your marriage.
