Antivirus Software - essentials

By: Aage Kold Jensen

Computer viruses have plagued us for a long time now and they evolve day by day. Malicious programmers every where keep on finding new ways to elude even the most reliable antivirus software. Whenever a virus has been eliminated by the security software companies a new loophole is found and a new virus is engineered and ready to beat your antivirus software. So if no antivirus software is installed on your PC or you cannot tell if it is working correctly, please visit my website for a free scan by some of the products there.

As you can probably understand it is a bad idea not to consider Computer security by not making sure you have some good antivirus software. It is the same as leaving personal items unattended in a crowded place.. It is in fact quite simple to install antivirus software, so there is no valid reason not to do this..

A frequent mistake to make when installing antivirus software is not to schedule regular scans or leave them scheduled to times of the day, where the computer is practically never turned on. If you do not carry out planned scans, your antivirus software will not benefit you. Even though the software scans the majority of files on the fly, viruses still manage to slip by. I have tried this. Seeing as you get viruses from the web or emails, the threat gets bigger the more you surf the internet making antivirus software and planned scans even more important.. You might be thinking that a system scan will slow your PC for as long as it takes, but on a modern Computer you wont be aware of any difference

Windows already has some antivirus software built into it, but I still recommend getting one from a recognized PC security company. Even though the built-in security features in Windows might work just fine, I never rely on those alone. I always have a "real" security program running as well.. No two antivirus software packages are ever the identical. Their virus databases can for apparent reasons never be identical so there is always the possibility that a virus slips by one program, but is caught by another..

An alternative to antivirus software is a comprehensive security package, that can handle all kinds of threats: antivirus, anti spyware, anti adware, popup blockers, etc. Then you will only have to bother with getting one program. There are lots of antivirus programs from many different companies, where some of those companies are more known than others.. It can seem overwhelming and determining the one that suits you best can thus be difficult. Many factors would affect ones choice such as the number of virus definitions in their database, system requirements and compatibility, features, user interface, price, etc. You can always turn to the web for help by looking for recommendations or reviews of antivirus software.

WARNING. There is a common type of scam going on with antivirus software. Essentially it's about scaring people into buying a program (taking your money) and on top of that putting more adware or spyware on your PC. If you surf around long enough you will without doubt land on such a website. But if you pay attention, you can easily spot an antivirus scam because of a small thing that practically always reveals them. A popup will all of a sudden jump into your face and say that your PC has viruses or something and instruct you to click a "Scan" button to check your system. Scanning your PC without your clear consent is an invasion of privacy and a legitimate company would never do that, which is how a warning like this reveals the fake antivirus software. If you didn't click "Scan" in the first place, you can bet the warning is a fake. In fact, your PC hasn't even been scanned, it is only a scare trick.

The majority of antivirus companies do offer a free virus scan either directly from their website or from inside their product and this is completely all right. So whether you are looking to find or you simply suspect your computer has been infected, just try a free virus scan.
