Before Enrolling in an Auto Theft Repair Service

By: Jessie Stone

From an economic standpoint, crime rates escalate during a recession when the production and income are down and the unemployment is high. As expected, people do not have anywhere to turn to for the provision of their basic needs and, as such, resort to crimes instead. Because the selling of cars is one of the most high-paying crimes that offers a lesser chance of getting caught, many are attracted by the prospect of stealing. According to reports about one vehicle is stolen every twenty-one minutes in the United States. This accounts for approximately one million of stolen cars in a year.
The sad part is that despite the efforts of the police, only about 12 percent of the total cars stolen is recovered with the thief locked behind bars. Thus, owners have to take a proactive stand in terms of protecting their prized possession from theft. Getting an insurance is one way of doing so; however, because of the high cost of premiums, not all people can afford them and only those who have paid a lot for their brand new ride turn to insurance. For those with secondhand or used cars or those who cannot afford premiums, a viable alternative is to enroll in an auto theft repair service. These services offer alarms and even tracking devices to warn you against car theft and to offer a backup way of recovering your stolen car.
Before obtaining the service of an auto theft repair service, the following are steps you can take to make sure that your car is protected at all times:
Keep your car locked and parked in a safe place. Even if you are in a familiar neighborhood and have to run an errand for only a few minutes, always keep your car locked. It only takes seconds to lock your car, so do so in all times even if you are heading a few feet away. If you are in new place, always park in densely populated and well-lighted areas.
Learn to double check things before leaving your car. Before heading off, check if you have locked all doors. Try to check also if you have completely rolled up all windows. Do not leave your valuables inside the car and in plain sight to tempt passers-by.
Don't trust your car lock. You have seen many movies depicting how cars are stolen even when locked, so do not get too trusty on you existing lock system. If possible, buy another lock for the steering wheel and brakes. Do not leave a spare of these locks in your car as it will defeat the purpose of having them in the first place.
List all the details of your car identification. Try to carry a list of your license number and vehicle identification number along with you at all times. You can keep it in small card tucked in your wallet. To be on the safe side, etch your identification number on as many car parts as possible.
