By: Marek Shrapnel

Once in a time, everybody wishes to lie back and relax. Just to sleep and take a rest in sweet calm. Have a massage, enjoy one's time. The West Bohemian Spa Triangle is a perfect place for the rebirth of your soul and body.

The long-subsided volcanic activity on the periphery of the Slavkov Forest was accompanied by the genesis of mineral springs that have made the district of West Bohemia recognized all-around the world. While Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) , established by the celebrated Czech ruler Charles 4, is the most distinguished spa city there, there are several other no less marvelous spa towns in the region that are extremely popular with both people with some disorders and tourists. Though the advantageous outcomes of the regional springs had apparently become acknowledged in as early as the 10th century, spas did not actually flourish until much later, in the 19th century. At the same time, Franzienbad was established at the very end of the eighteenth century, followed by the setting up of Marienbad, as a result completing the "Spa Triangle". Local and overseas visitors alike have been approaching to enjoy the local mineral springs for hundreds of years; the visitors' book of the spa resorts take in the names of crowned heads such as the English king Edward VII, Napoleon III, legendary composers such as Fryderyk Chopin and Richard Wagner, writers such as Johann W. Goethe, Mark Twain and Franz Kafka, or for example the esteemed Moravian-born originator of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud. However there is more. You can too benefit from the rich cultural program, go away for cycling, rock climbing and visiting the attractions trips, play tennis and golf, ride a horse, try water sports in summer & cross-country skiing in winter.

Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad / Karlsbad)

Carlsbad is the best known spa town located in West Bohemia. It was founded around 1350 by the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia, Charles 4. Its grand roads as well as colonnades are surrounded by peaceful wooded hills crisscrossed with climbing and biking paths that are best for enjoyable walks all time of the year round.
A full of activity cultural events calendar, various festivals & international conferences make Karlovy Vary the main & liveliest spa city in the Czech Republic visited not only by the spa-guests but also celebrities. Karlsbad achieved its fame also thanks to its well-known natural liqueur named Becherovka (nicknamed "The thirteenth Spring"), Mattoni mineral water, exclusive spa wafers, and Moser crystal glass.
The curing waters from the springs in the valley of the Tepla River have been used by public from time immemorial - both for drinking as well as bathing.

Marianske Lazne (Marienbad)

The town of Marienbad locates in a gorgeous wide valley in West Bohemia, 628 meters above sea level. An approximately twenty km wide strip of forest with numerous mountaineering paths passes right throughout the spa resort.
Marienbad enjoys an outstanding reputation all-around the world both for its therapeutic treatment methods and valuable natural curative sources, as well as for its picturesque, enchanting surroundings. Almost a hundred old springs have been discovered in and all-around the town, all with great concentration of CO2. Some had been discovered as early as in the sixteenth century.
A sincere gem among the local neoclassical buildings is the spa town colonnade built in 1889. The spa region is dominated by the so-called 'Singing Fountain' entertaining the passers-by with melody and illumination performances.
Marienbad launched its 1st spa season in 1808, but instantly started to be a admired resort amongst Europe's elite. Amongst its clients had been English Ruler Edward VII., Polish composer & pianist Fryderyk Chopin and German bard Goethe.
The local spas focus in treating musculoskeletal problems, as well as disorders of the urinary tract, kidney and gynecological problems. The programs are based mostly on natural sources - cold ferrite acidulous water, natural gas, CO2 and mud.

Frantiskovy Lazne (Franzienbad)

Frantiskovy Lazne (Franzienbad), founded in 1793, is a worldwide recognized spa town located in the western area of the Czech Republic. Thanks to its neoclassical spa buildings & pavilions the city preserved the exceptional atmosphere of the early 20th century and is regarded as one of the most charming spa town in the country.
The region provides mild climate, fresh air as well as peaceful town life. Numerous parks around the city with its promenades & musicians are a perfect place for calming walks. All these issues add to the curing effects of the local mineral springs that every year draw numerous spa-goers.
