Can a New Sink Interface With an Old Pop-up Stopper Apparatus?

By: Byron Gram

There are many challenges in %LINK1% for the %LINK2% and homeowner alike. One of the minor but at times irritating areas of bathroom plumbing is problems related to the popup assembly.
Pop-up stoppers are convenient devices, allowing homeowners to collect water in the sink for various purposes or drain the sink at will. However, at times, problems related to the mechanism can be a bit challenging for the amateur plumber.
One common question that homeowners have for plumbers is whether the old pop-up mechanism can interface with a new faucet. This problem arises when DIY homeowners purchase a new faucet for the bathroom sink. The installation itself is usually straightforward , but when the homeowner sees that the kit comes with a replacement for the pop-up mechanism, he begins to wonder if it is necessary to entirely do away with the old popup mechanism or whether the new set up can be connected to the old pop-up assembly.
In truth, in most instances, the vertical lift arm of the new assembly can be successfully attached to the old assembly; provided, of course, that the old assembly still works and is worth saving.
The key question is whether the new lift rod can be successfully connected to the old horizontal pivot arm.
The new vertical lift rod descends from the new faucet assembly. The popup strap is affixed to the bottom of the lift rod, and has holes into which the horizontal rod is fitted. This is the connection point between the old and new assembly.
The positive news is that the assembly linkage mechanism really hasn't changed that much over the years. So even older popup assemblies 10 -20 years older will probably interface nicely with the new mechanism. When there is a compatibility issue it usually relates to the diameter of the holes in the popup strap being too small for the diameter of the horizontal pivot rod. This is no problem. A little drill action will easily widen the hole sufficiently to allow admittance of the horizontal rod.
When the assembly is completed, the new vertical lift rod will be connected to the old horizontal rod via the new popup strap, and the sink will be ready for operation.
