Children, Technology and need for Parental Control Software

By: BN

Thanks to today’s technology, parents find themselves in a unique and extremely difficult position of having to monitor their children’s interactions on social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and others, as well as email accounts and cell phones. While parents frantically install parental controls, as well as content filtering software on their home computers, it would appear as though schools have found themselves having to jump on the same bandwagon. It is currently estimated that over 98% of schools offer both computer and Internet access to their students. With these huge numbers, it is obvious that not every computer exchange can be supervised by a teacher or school representative. This is why schools are now installing their own Internet monitoring systems as well as their own content filtering software.

As parents, a number one concern is always to ensure the safety and security of our children and, frankly, the Internet and cell phones have turned this, once simpler task, into a nightmarish one. It is fair to say that children resent their parents greatly for, what they perceive, to be a breach of their privacy and parents are feeling more and more assaulted by the ever increasing number of ways in which their children could potentially get themselves in trouble. In short, technology is making everyone’s life all that much more difficult, in many households across the US.

The good news is that as technology advances and produces more social media sites and pages, the creators and manufacturers of parental controls and software programs are advancing right along with them. This means that as each latest craze is released a monitoring software program is not far behind.

Installing appropriate Internet filtering software is, however, only half the battle and parents are greatly encouraged to take the time to sit with their children and have an honest and frank discussion about their concerns. In many cases, hearing everyone’s perspective of the situation can be extremely helpful in diffusing many of the potential time bombs.

Realistically, however, the only way for parents to truly get some peace of mind is by installing the most recent and up to date parental control software programs, currently available on the market. While your kids may feel, that by doing this, you are sending the message that you do not trust your children, eventually, they will come to understand that the real message is that you love them enough to make sure that they are safe and secure, even it is means getting that evil look.
