Choosing a Dog Breed

By: John Stovall

Roughly every household in America has a dog. There are hundreds of dog breeds out there for everyone. You find some breeds that are little and others immense. With so many different breeds out, it can get overwhelming trying to find the right dog. To help you choose the right breed, below are some of what you should look for in a dog.

Dog breeds are categorized on their size and what they are used for. For example, the toy breed includes the Shih Tzu, Maltese, Miniature Poodle, and Pugs. These breeds are bred to keep you company and busy. On the other hand, the hunting breed which include the Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever are useful for hunting. They are an tremendous swimmer and are bred like their name implies - to retrieve something back.

When searching for a dog, you should find one that fits your lifestyle. This will preclude the dog from getting bored or you getting annoyed because the dog is not doing what you want them to do. If you live in an apartment complex, small dogs are better equipped to live there. They don’t want a lot of exercising and don’t require a large amount of food to make them full.

For small dog breeds, they can live in a home or apartment. These breeds don’t need a lot of exercise to be healthy. However, you should play with them or take them outside once a day. The amount of food they eat will be in small quantity so you will be able to save a lot of money on their food. If you have a small dog breed with long hair, they will need standard grooming. Grooming will preclude their hair from matting together and keep their skin healthy.

For the larger breeds, having a home is more suitable than an apartment. However, they can still live in an apartment, but you’ll need to take extra care. Since a home will typically have a backyard, it will make a wonderful place for them to exercise. In addition, when living in a home, they will have added space to roam around.

Before picking out a dog, make sure to check what kind of breed it is and what they were bred to do. You can find additional information about each dog breed online. Make sure to compare each breed to each other so it will give you a better idea to what breed fits your family and your lifestyle. You can also join dog forums and ask questions about the particular breed that you’re interested in. The more you know about the dog breed, the simpler it will be for you to choose a dog.

Having a dog part of the family is a big responsibility and you need to care for them just like a infant. So before you make a decision on which dog to bring home, take your time to do your research first to ensure you choose the right dog breed.
