Choosing the Best Christmas Decorations

By: Roberto Garabell

Christmas decorations are an integral part of your Christmas celebrations, and knowing how to choose the right ones will make your holidays both stress free and more enjoyable. Often times picking the right decorations can be a difficult process. There are so many items to choose from, all with various levels of quality. Below, you'll find tips and information to help you pick the best decorations.

Let's start with the tree. Regardless if you're going with a real or artificial Christmas tree, you'll want to be sure to measure your ceiling height before you start looking. You should save six inches to one foot to either have a little space between your ceiling and the top of the tree, or to include a tree topper. You should also measure that space you have on the floor, and compare that to the base width of trees you're considering. Having a tree that is too tall, too short, too narrow, or too wide won't do! With real trees, make sure you look all around the tree for "holes" or funky sections. You don't want to get home and realize only one side of the tree looked good. With artificial Christmas trees, you don't need to worry about "holes", as the branches will be evenly spaced.

On the subject of artificial Christmas trees, there are two main types these days: PVC and PE/PVC. Trees with PVC needles are the traditional style you've seen for many years. Trees with a combination of PE and PVC needles are a newer design, and the PE needles are made to look far more realistic. So if you're going for the most realistic tree possible, choose one with PE needles. Some, cheaper artificial trees have branches that must be inserted into the center pole. You should stay away from these at all costs, as they take a long time and can be a real pain. Make sure to look for an artificial tree with hinged branches. Next up, lights. Most artificial trees come already pre-lit. You can get them with incandescent or LED lights. LED lights last much longer than incandescent, and they use far less energy. So you're probably better off with LED lights. Just keep in mind that there are two types of white LED lights: pure white, and warm white. The pure white lights look very bright, and are a brilliant white. The warm white lights look more like traditional incandescent lights. Most people prefer the look of warm white lights on a Christmas tree.

Aside from trees, wreaths and garlands make a great addition to any decorating theme. In selecting wreaths and garlands, if they're going to be near your tree, you should aim to find styles that match your tree. They don't have to be the same needle type, but shouldn't look entirely different. However, you could go for instance with a flocked tree, but green wreaths and garlands with berries and pine cones. So there are occasions when you might want to contrast the look for variation. Not only can you hang Christmas ornaments on a tree, but also on wreaths and garlands. Small, 3" solid ball ornaments look great on wreaths and garlands. Stick with the traditional colors of red, green, and gold for a classic but classy look.

How about Christmas lights for the interior and exterior of your home? Just like with lights for your tree, you'll find both incandescent and LED options. Again, you'll be better off with LED lights as they'll last much longer, won't get hot, and will use far less electricity. Both incandescent and LED Christmas lights come in many sizes, from mini to C7 and C9. So you shouldn't have any trouble finding LED lights in any configuration you want.

With the right sized tree, complimentary wreaths and garlands decorated nicely with ornaments, and long lasting LED lights, you're done! Of course you can add other accents such as picks, sprays, table cloths, and napkins, but you'll have the bulk of your Christmas decorating work behind you.
