Custom Auto Upholstery - Three Reasons to Consider Dashboard Replacement

By: Thomas Bridleman

Having your car’s dashboard replaced is a moderately large custom auto upholstery project that is generally not done by itself. More often than not, it is rolled into, and becomes part of a larger effort to completely redefine the interior spaces of the vehicle. There are three primary reasons for having your car’s dashboard replaced, and we’ll cover them in brief, below:

1 - If you’re planning to have other work done as part of an ongoing or larger effort at changing the look of your vehicle’s interior, it makes sense to make replacing the dashboard a high priority. After all, when you’re in the driver’s seat, if your eyes aren’t on the road, they’re likely on the dash. This can include simpler stuff like wanting to fix the cracks that have developed in leather seats and dashes, or repairing damage to door panels, and then, to keep a consistent “look and feel” throughout the vehicle, also replacing the dash. You may also find yourself wanting to change out the dash if you decide to re-carpet the vehicle, and find yourself gravitating toward a new color scheme.

2 - If you’re restoring a classic car and want to return it to mint, or near-mint condition, you’ll almost certainly need the services of a specialist. That’s a fairly involved job, and I’ve never seen a classic car (besides those that have already been restored) that had a pristine dash. This category probably makes up half of all the folks who opt to have a dash restored. If you are a restoration hobbyist or enthusiast, or have spent time around one, you know full well how wonderfully obsessed these folks can be over the smallest detail, and something like a dash that’s in less than pristine condition is a problem that’s simply crying out to be addressed!

3 - If you’ve made some changes to your vehicle requiring a reconfiguration of the dashboard to accommodate (i.e., adding a CD player to a vehicle not designed to house one might require replacing the dash/restructuring parts of the console to accommodate this change. I’ve also seen radical dash makeovers on older cars when the owner decides to, say, install an air conditioner in a pre-AC era vehicle. Even though this might make an auto restorer cringe, the effect can be to modernize the vehicle with only limited visual impact on its interior styling.

Remember that a dashboard replacement is not a trivial task, and is much more involved than, say, a headliner replacement. Even so, such a project is usually quite reasonably priced and definitely worth doing, especially as part of a larger overall effort.

This, of course, is but one of a great number of services that a good custom auto interior specialist can perform for you.
