Developing as a Writer

By: Debbie Holland

Developing your writing skills can help you in so many different facets of everyday life, even if you don't plan on making a living as a writer. Writing workshops can aid you in strengthening your writing abilities and also expose you to other writing techniques.
Once you recognize that writing is an essential form of communication, you will be able to see how increasing your skill level will assist in better communicating in all areas. Remember, you don't have to be a professional writer or even want to become one, to benefit from becoming a stronger written communicator. Here are some of the ways that a workshop might help:
? These forums are pretty anonymous. Of course, you use a name and you interact with the other participants, but you never see them and the focus is place on the work and the writing.
? In addition to becoming a stronger writer, you will strengthen you critical thinking and personal relations skills. These workshops encourage you to share your work, as well as to critique others writing.
? If you are a writer, you will gain great insight as to how other people perceive your work. In many cases, we may think we are getting our point across, when in fact the reader may be confused. A forum like this will let you take a look at your writing through other people's eyes.
If you're really serious about becoming a better writer, check out an on-line workshop; they might just be the perfect fit for you.
