Dirt cheap solar cells

By: Roberto Garabell

As the latest trend of 'green' technology starts to take off, solar cell costs are becoming a problem. Sure there are some really interesting cells out there, and some very efficient too. For example take some of the work Spectrolab (a subsidiary of Boeing) is undertaking with solar cells. They've managed to obtain cells with a 45% efficiency, they promise to deliver this to the masses, but not for the next six years or so.

Having just that in mind Dr. Lee Kwang-Hee of the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology in Korea came up with a solution that provides a 6.5% efficiency for the power cell, but in return costs only 10 cents per watt. Now compare that with the $2.30 it takes current cells to generate a watt of electricity.

So although work is still underway, we can expect economically feasible solutions for the 'clean' electricity problem in the near future.
