Do The Declutter Challenge, and Finally See Results!!

By: Marlee Dorst

It's another month, another week, another day... and it is time to take the Declutter Challenge! Wouldn't you love to be able to return home to a clean, neat, peaceful house? Wouldn't it be brilliant to be cooking in a kitchen where all of your utensils are in their correct spots, and where your counters glisten and beg to be filled with home made cookies as opposed to clutter? Take the Declutter Challenge today! Unsure of what is meant by Declutter Challenge? Simply put, a Declutter Challenge is a challenge you assign yourself (and/or your friends and family) to get a huge part of your house decluttered in a particular time frame. And it WORKS!

The One Week Declutter Challenge

A different category of challenge will have you to reserve one full week to your challenge. This will be a serious "no distractions allowed" week throughout which you empty your schedule with the goal of reclaiming what once wsa your decluttered home. Each day, pick and choose one room, close yourself within it so to speak, and go nuts! Garbage bags, boxes for donations and re-sell, and obviously some basic cleaning supplies are your necessities. Pull your significant other, your friends, or your kids along for the ride! Many hands make light work, but also many hands make much clean!
Perhaps you will be better off to cut back and assign yourself a One Week Bedroom Declutter Challenge, or a One Week Toy Room Declutter Challenge. Don't worry about it! By committing yourself for seven days (and really, what is seven days on the whole), and you'll without a doubt bring order back to at least part of your chaotic house!

The 2010 in 2010 Declutter Challenge

This type of Declutter Challenge is a popular one. Commit yourself to decluttering (by donating, selling, or throwing out) 2010 things in the course of the year 2010. Sounds impossible? If you do the math though, it is really not as crazy as it sounds. 2010 divided into 365 days is just 5.5 items daily. Look around you... your junk drawer, the cupboard under the stairs, your bedroom, the storage shed... that makes it seem more possible now, does it? Keep track by ticking it off on the calendar or somewhere handy, and see the clutter vanish!
Yet another way you could do the 2010 Declutter Challenge is to commit 2010 minutes specifically to decluttering! That's 33.5 hours.... A great deal until you take into account that there are 8,760 hours in one year! That is not even one 45 minute session per week! However, 2010 minutes is enough to get a LOT decluttered!

The 30 Day Declutter Challenge

The final kind of challenge is often called the 30 Day Declutter Challenge, and the concept is that on all of the 30 days of the month you declutter one object or area of your home, big or little. The things can range from the middle drawer in your armoir to the media centre in your den, from your junk drawer to the stationery collection that gets hidden in the office closet. The bottom line is to be practical with your task assignment. Assigning "put photos accumulated from the previous two years into photo albums" probably isn't do-able in one afternoon, but perhaps "organize the photographs into piles or envelopes by the event or child and throw out of photos you don't need to keep" COULD be done!
When your tasks are assigned, think about planning for yourself a reward to look forward to after your 30 Day Challenge ends successfully! Yes, you will feel rewarded just seeing your clutter-free house, you can not deny that we have a tendency to put in more energy if we have something extra to get from our pains!

So, the "One Week Declutter Challenge", and the "2010 in 2010 Declutter Challenge", and the the "30 Day Declutter Challenge"... three excellent ways to start decluttering your house! Which challenge will you do?
