Do The Declutter Challenge!

By: Marlee Dorst

It's another month, another week, another day... and it's time to set up the Decluttering Challenge! Wouldn't it be terrific to be able to return home to a clean, tidy, peaceful home? Imagine the fun of cooking in a kitchen where all your utensils are in their proper places, and where your counters glisten and beg to be covered with fresh cookies as opposed to clutter? Give yourself a Decluttering Challenge right now! Unsure what a Decluttering Challenge is? It put it simply, a Decluttering Challenge is a challenge you offer yourself (and/or your family and friends) to get a massive part of your home clutter-free in a prespecified time frame. And it WORKS!

The 30 Day Decluttering Challenge

One category of challenge is often called the 30 Day Declutter Challenge, and the concept is that on each one of the 30 days of the month you decluttering one object or section of your home, great or small. The things can range from the middle shelf in your pantry cupboard to the toy bin in your son's bedroom, from your sock drawer to the kraft supply kit that gets hidden in the spare room closet. The secret is to be practical with your chore assignment. Putting "put photographs collected the previous two years into albums" most likely isn't do-able in one afternoon, but perhaps "sort out the photographs into piles or envelopes by the occasion or person and get rid of photos you don't wish to keep" CAN be done!
After your tasks are assigned, consider giving yourself a reward to look forward to as soon as your 30 Day Challenge ends victoriously! Yes, you'll feel rewarded just looking at your decluttered home, you most likely know that we have a tendency to put in more energy if we have something extra to gain from our pains!

The One Week Declutter Challenge

Another type of challenge will require you to set aside one entire week to your project. This will be a serious "no one can distract me" week for the duration of which you clear out your schedule with the objective of reclaiming what once wsa your decluttered house. Each day, select one room, close yourself within it so to speak, and get to work! Garbage bags, bins for donations and re-sell, and not surprisingly some ordinary cleaning supplies are your must-haves. Pull your significant other, your room-mate, or your family along with you! Many hands make light work, but also many hands make much clean!
Perhaps you will see the need to cut back and give yourself a One Week Bedroom Declutter Challenge, or a One Week Spare Room Declutter Challenge. Don't worry about it! If you commit to decluttering for seven days (and really, what is seven days on the whole), and you'll definitely bring order back to at least part of your chaotic house!

The 2010 in 2010 Decluttering Challenge

This kind of Declutter Challenge is a favorite. Commit yourself to decluttering (by donating, selling, or throwing out) 2010 things throughout the year 2010. Does that sound like way to much? If you do the math though, it's not as crazy as it sounds. 2010 divided into 365 days is merely 5.5 things daily. Look around you... the junk drawer, the cupboard in the basement, your kitchen, the work shop... that makes it seem more possible now, does it? Tick off your success on a calendar, and see the clutter disappear!
One more way one might do the 2010 Decluttering Challenge is to commit 2010 minutes specifically to decluttering! That's 33.5 hours.... A lot until you take into account that there are 8,760 hours in one year! It's not even one 45 minute session per week! And yet 2010 minutes is sufficient to get a LOT clutter-free!

So, the "30 Day Declutter Challenge", the "One Week Decluttering Challenge", and the "2010 in 2010 Declutter Challenge"... three great ways to start decluttering your home! Which one will you do?
