Exterior Painting prep and how to choose a color and sheen

By: TR Scott

Choosing the color for the outside of your home can be very scary. You want something that will blend in nicely with your surroundings and not cause the neighbors to turn you into the local municipality for having an ugly home. You can never go wrong if you choose a warm earthy tone color for your home. Older historical homes look lovely when painted in the colors of their era. Look closely at chipped surfaces to see if there are any signs as to the original colors and try to copy those as closely as possible.
Scrape the surface to be painted to get rid of old chipped paint before priming. If you have a power sprayer and the wind isn't blowing this can be a quick approach to getting the job done in a hurry. Although you can't use a sprayer for your trim or around it, you can use it for large areas.
Paint your siding with an exterior flat or satin paint. Most siding paints are made to wash themselves when it rains and if you use them on your trim you might end up with bleeding down your siding. Paint your trim with a semi-gloss or gloss house paint. Be sure to always purchase a good quality paint. The better the paint - the longer it will last.
