Fashion Revolution – Cross Dressing

According to sociologists, fashion is like language; may it be for good or the bad, what’s important is that it continuously changes. Through the years, different trends has been innovated by man in order to provide him the comfort that he needs at the same time providing the identity that one requires for him/her. One of the oldest fashion trends that man has came up with is Cross Dressing.

Cross dressing is commonly known as the act of an individual to represent one’s self in a set of wardrobe, with the intention of projecting a persona of the actor’s opposite sex. This trend can be often seen in the industry of film, theater, and sometimes, even in music. It has been dated back to the early medieval ages, when actors are compelled to hail roles of the opposite sex due to lack of options. However, overtime, a new type of drama has evolved, involving the intended cross dressing of actors, as a modern style of presenting stories.

Due to the influence of the media, it has become a fashion explosion for the LGBT community, taking the opportunity to reinstate their identity or desired personality. According to a research conducted in 1999, 80-85% of cross dressers are heterosexual.

However, under the house of fashion, Cross Dressing does not automatically mean to present one’s self in preference of the opposite sex. It could be just a mere implication of the continuously evolving trend in the industry. Oscar dela Renta has released a collection, dressing men in mankinds for summer, while Alexander McQueen has also lately release an ensemble for men with feminine cuts and designs, such as corset and tube-styled shirts. These collections were not made as an exclusive response for the LGBT community preferences, but as a simple and general answer for the fast-changing requirement of the modern society ; clothing comfort both not only for the body, but also for the wearer’s soul.
