Gasless MIG Welding Tips, Tricks And Stuff You Need To Know.

By: emman_airness

Gasless MIG welding is a process that can be done by virtually anybody at home. The beauty of using a small gasless welder is in its portability and affordability. You can purchase the wire and machine both online where there are competitive prices or you can get it from in town.

You need to use what is called a self shielding gasless MIG wire as this stuff requires no welding gas. What you need to look for on the box of wire is a code or a number that is this E71T-GS. This code simply means that it is at all positional welding wire and needs no shielding gas for it to work. This stuff you can weld vertical up, vertical down, overhead, horizontal and in the flat position. This is probably the most common wire for the DIY welding person. You can also get another grade of wire which is designed for multiple pass welding.

It is very important that when you use these softer wires it can feed through the gun cable as easily as possible. This means you need to have the correct size liner, the correct size contact tip and you also need to use a knurled feed roller. A standard feed roller that you use on solid wire has a simple groove machined into it that looks like the letter V. Where as a knurled feed roller has serrations that have been machined into the surface of the V groove. Again, because this wire is much softer than solid wire you need to have something to give it more traction so that it can feed smoothly. It's a bit like having off-road tires when you go off-road driving. If you were to use road tires out in the mud you wouldn't get very far. And the same goes here for feeding the softer flux cored wires.

There are many projects that you can do with a small gasless MIG welder around the house. One warning though, when you weld with gasless MIG wire it let's off lots of fumes. These fumes can be very bad for your health so it's a good idea to always weld in a well ventilated area. If for arguments sake you are welding inside a garage, make sure that you open up the roll-a-doors, windows and the side doors for maximum ventilation.

Gasless MIG welding is easy to do yourself even for beginners. One point I will make is that a lot of people do not know that you have to make sure that you have the right polarity on your machine.

Another tip I can suggest is that if you ever do buy a "no gas" MIG welder you should also see if you can get yourself a machine that can weld both with gas and without gas. This way you are not limiting yourself to running gasless wire, as you will be able to use solid wire too which gives much cleaner results.
