Genealogy jargon

Here are some of the genealogy terms you're most likely to find.

Abstract
A summary of an original document, for example, the salient points of a title deed or lease, showing ownership rights.

Administration
The legal process of management and disposal of an estate by an administrator.

Affidavit
A written statement confirmed (attested to) by one or more witnesses.

Ancestor
A person from whom one is descended, usually more remote than a grandparent.

Census
The enumeration of the population, usually including details such as age, date of birthplace of residence, family relationships, and employment.

Chattels
Personal property of a movable nature, including transferable legal documents sush as leases.

Christen
Admit to Christian church by means of baptism.

Devise
Bequeath by will. The devisor bequeaths to the devisee.

Descendant
A person who derives (is descended) from an ancestor.

Direct line
The continuous succession from parent to offspring over generations.

Diocese
The area of the country for which a particular Bishop is responsible.

Iconography
The study of the meaning of pictorial representations.

IGI
International Genealogical Index. A database of genealogical information maintained by the Mormons.

Intestate
Deceased, having not left a will.

Paleography
The study of old handwriting.

Patronymic
A name derived from the father's name, eg Tom Johnson is the name of John's son Tom.

Pedigree
The ancestry of a person or family, presented as a table or in tree form.

Primogeniture
The right of the first-born child to inherit the entire estate. ln feudal times, the right was extended only to the eldest son.

Probate
The process through which a will is verified.
