Historical Timeline of Trophies and Awards

Awards and trophies have been used to mark excellent victories for the reason that historic times. The English phrase trophy itself was derived from the French trophée in 1513, "a spoil or prize of battle", from Latin trophaeum that means 'monument to victory'.
In ancient Greece, trophies themselves were made on the battlefields of victorious battles from captured arms and standards, and have been hung upon a tree or a large stake made to resemble a warrior. These have been often inscribed with a story of the battle and devoted to varied gods. Trophies made for naval victories generally consisted of whole ships (or what remained of them) laid out on the beach. To destroy a trophy was thought-about a sacrilege and an unforgivable crime.
The traditional Romans however stored their trophies much closer to home. They built magnificent trophies in Rome, including columns and arches atop great foundations. Winners of horse races, and later boating and early car races, have been the typical recipients of those trophies. The Davis Cup, Stanley Cup, and quite a few World Cups are all now famous cup-shaped trophies given to sports activities winners.
At present, trophies are a lot inexpensive, and thus rather more pervasive, because of mass-produced plastic trophies.
