How To Add An IP Routing Protocol On Windows Server 2003

In a large network, routers should be able to share routing information about the company's subnets. Using static routing is not the appropriate choice in this situation because it has a lot of disadvantages in this case. Therefore, the best solution is to use dynamic routing protocols such as OSPF and RIP. These protocols can exchange routing information automatically and dynamically between all the company's routers.

Windows Server 2003 allows to you setup OSPF and RIP routing protocols. In the coming paragraphs you'll learn to add a protocol of IP routing. Here are the steps to do this:

Step 1: Open the Routing and Remote Access MMC.

Step 2: In the tree structure of the Routing and Remote Access MMC, click on Routing and Remote Access.

Step 4: Click on the name of your server.

Step 5: Click on IP Routing

Step 6: Click on General

Step 7: Click with the right button of your mouse on General, and then click on New Routing Protocol.

Step 8: In Routing Protocols, click on the routing protocol you need to add, and then on OK.

Step 9: If necessary, complete any dialog boxes of the protocol's configuration.

Take into account that you should be a member of the Administrators group in order to execute the following procedure. It is suggested to right-click the Routing and Remote Access icon and then click on Run As option rather than to open a Windows session using the credentials of a member of the Administrators group.

If you opened a session with identification information of a member of the Administrators security group, you can also open the Routing and Remote Access MMC (Microsoft Management Console) by double-clicking on Routing and distant access located in the Administrative Tools folder, which you can it by clicking on Start and then click on Control panel.
