How To Remove An IP Routing Protocol On Windows Server 2003

By: Mohamed Ahmed Ouamer

When changing or replacing a routing protocol by another such as replacing RIP by OSPF, it is recommended to set the administrative protocol of the newer routing protocol to a higher value greater than the value that has the old routing protocol. This you'll avoid a lot of routing problems such as routing loops and so on. Once you finish the setup of the new routing protocol, and verify your configuration, then you can set the administrative distance of the new routing protocol to a value lower than the one used for the older routing protocol. Additionally, you'll have to verify IP connectivity among your network, and then remove the old routing protocol from your routers.

To accomplish this last action in Windows Server 2003, read these instructions:

Step 1: Open the Routing and Remote Access MMC.

Step 2: In the tree structure of the Routing and Remote Access MMC, click on Routing and Remote Access.

Step 4: Click on the name of your server.

Step 5: Click on IP Routing

Step 6: Click on General

Step 7: Click on IP routing protocol

Step 8: Click with the right button of your mouse on the IP routing protocol that you need to remove, and then click on Delete.

Take into account that you should be a member of the Administrators group in order to execute the following procedure. It is suggested to right-click the Routing and Remote Access icon and then click on Run As option rather than to open a Windows session using the credentials of a member of the Administrators group.

If you opened a session with identification information of a member of the Administrators security group, you can also open the Routing and Remote Access MMC (Microsoft Management Console) by double-clicking on Routing and distant access located in the Administrative Tools folder, which you can it by clicking on Start and then click on Control panel.

The CCNA exam is not an easy exam, and I suggest you to purchase one CCNA study guide from the ones available on the market and purchase a CCNA lab workbook to pass you exam and build up your routing and switching skills.
