How to Avoid problems in the Workplace.

By: Ryan James

Safety should always come first in the place of work. Occasional mishaps are bound to occur now and again, but as long as everyone is sensible, then 99% of mishaps can be avoided altogether.

Follow Regulations.
Rules and regulations can come across as being a bit of a drag sometimes. It may even take more time to carry out a task because of having to do it in a certain way! But regulations are in place to keep us all safe. They should at all times be respected and you should never cut corners to save time. By doing so, you may well be putting yourself and others at risk.

Use Your Common Sense.
Certain things are pretty obvious to nearly all of us... We should in no way leave tools lying around on the floor in case someone trips over them, a warning sign should always be placed on a slippery floor and we do not stroll beneath items that are being lifted by a crane!
But it is surprising how many people still do not use their common sense. So many mishaps can easily be prevented if we only stop and think!

Do Not Use Equipment if You Do Not Have the Correct Training.
We should never, ever use equipment if we have not been properly trained! Lots of problems have come about simply because of someone using machinery without the proper knowledge. This means that scissor lifts should only be operated by someone with [IPAF training] and overhead cranes should be controlled by a fully qualified member of staff!

Wear Your Personal Protection Equipment.
If you are given certain protective items to wear then PUT THEM ON! So many people still ignore this and end up having horrendous problems.
Cleaning sharp machinery will require special gloves, dusty environments need facemasks and goggles need to be worn when your eyes are at risk. It’s not rocket science is it?

The workplace is Not a Playground.
You’d be surprised at just how many problems are caused by someone larking around. We all like to have a laugh sometimes, but work is not the right place for it! There are so many potential hazards to be aware of and messing around can end up with someone getting very seriously hurt.

* * *

So, there you go. It’s all pretty straightforward stuff, isn’t it? Well possibly so, but there are still quite a few staff who insist on purposely ignoring one or more of these factors. They are of the opinion that ‘it will never happen to them’, but this is the wrong way of thinking!! No-one is exempt from Safe Working Practice.

We are only human and we will all make the occasional mistake... fingers will get bashed, people will trip on the stairs and hot drinks will scald people. However, many mishaps can be avoided by following basic safety rules; do not use a scissor lift without proper [IPAF training], always wear your protective equipment and do not shout ‘Boo!’ at your workmate when he is using an angle grinder...

This will all help to improve on our safety in the place of work!
