How to Use the Addon Domain Feature in cPanel?

By: padmini

Did you know that your cPanel also allows using 'Addon Domain' feature, in order to create a new website within your current web hosting account? The answer is yes, indeed.

cPanel is a user-friendly, easy to use, UNIX-based web hosting control panel with intuitive graphical interface to tactfully handle the otherwise tedious procedures of web hosting as well as server administration. And all this is executed through your web browser only.

When it comes to the Addon domain feature, it is nothing but similar to a domain name, but which is added to an existing web hosting account having an existing primary domain name. This implicates that you have the option to run different websites from one single hosting account, with each having their own unique domains. This means that you don't have to pay for different web hosting accounts, and you can host your site on the same hosting account you have already purchased. This not only saves you money but also helps you in easy management of all the files on the web server.

A naive website administrator would though find it much complicated without cPanel, to add a new domain name to his account, as cPanel makes the whole job very easy with only a few clicks that what it takes. The following steps would help you add a new domain name through cPanel:

1. Login to your cPanel administration panel.
2. Under the 'Domains' section, select 'Addon Domains' option.
3. Add your new domain name without " http://www ", such that the format becomes "yourdomain.com".
4. After you click next to the field, the consequent two will automatically be executed for you and the 'Subdomain/FTP Username' having the data or username for you to use for accessing your new site through FTP, is also clarified. The 'Document Root' field, which will show you the location of the root directory of your new site. For instance, for 'yourdomain.com' the document root will be 'public_html/yourdomain.com'.
5. Lastly, you need to give a password and click the Save button. Your new domain name is ready to be used.

Another thing to take note of is that if you have purchased your domain from a different company, you would be required to reset the Nameserver settings of your domain, that is, you will need to get the Nameserver settings from your hosting account and apply them onto the domain name from the new company. Hence all these are all saved up with this single option.
