How to activate routing on LAN and WAN networks on Windows 2003

By: Mohamed Ahmed Ouamer

In this article, you'll learn how to activate routing on local and wide area networks. It is written for LAN administrators, Windows Administrators and students preparing Windows server 2003 certifications. It can be useful also for people studying for the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) certification exam.

The first step in using the routing and Remote and Remote Access service is to enable the routing feature on wanted local and wide area interfaces. To do this, follow these steps:

Step 1: Open Routing and Remote Access MMC (Microsoft Management Console).

Step 2: Click with the right button of your mouse on the name of the server for which you want to activate the routing feature, and then click on Properties.

Step 3: Under the General tab, activate the check box Enable This Server As a Router, and then execute one of the following actions:
. For local area network routing, just click on Local routing only (LAN router).
. For local area network and wide area network routing, click on Local and remote routing (LAN and WAN router).

Keep in mind that you must be member of the Administrators group in order to perform this procedure. It is recommended to right-click the Routing and Remote Access icon and then click on Run As option rather than to open a Windows session using the credentials of member of the Administrators group.

If you opened a session with identification information of a member of the Administrators security group, you can also open the Routing and Remote Access MMC (Microsoft Management Console) by double-clicking on Routing and distant access located in the Administrative Tools folder, which you can it by clicking on Start and then click on Control panel.

Finally, it is recommended to setup a dynamic routing protocol that does consume high amount of bandwidth in order to save this over WAN (Wide Area Network) links.

The CCNA exam is not an easy exam, and I suggest you to purchase one CCNA study guide from the ones available on the market and purchase a CCNA lab workbook to pass you exam and build up your routing and switching skills.
