HyperFlash cache from AMD

By: Roberto Garabell

HyperFlash is AMD's response to TurboMemory Flash from Intel. The basic concept behind HyperFlash and TurboMemory is to put a native flash memory where the operating system can store frequently needed data . This will lead to smaller response time and lower power consumption. The advantage being obvious, there's no wonder AMD came up with HyperFlash.

HyperFlash will be implemented along with the M780 chipset and the Griffin processor within the 'Puma' laptop platform. It's important to note that HyperFlash connects directly to the chipset. Also AMD has provided manufacturing details to several Flash memory producers in order to provide several supplier choices to laptop manufacturers. On the other side Intel has already launched 512KB and 1GB PCI add-in cards that have to pass trough the PCI bus first, thus loosing some of the transfer speed.

So the big picture is that AMD has better performance but Intel is already on the market. I'm sure in the end it will all compensate.
