Kodak new image sensor

By: Roberto Garabell

In case you didn't know current image sensors use Kodak's proprietary technology named the "Bayer Pattern" (after Bryce Bayer, the Kodak researcher who discovered it) . This model uses a pattern of Red, Green and Blue pixels that captures light and then a digital image is constructed based on that.

The new image sensor developed by Kodak uses a similar pattern but adds panchromatic pixels, that can capture any color in the visible wavelength spectrum. Using advanced algorithms all the additional data can be processed to obtain clearer photos even in low light environments. On this, Kodak officials stated:

This represents a new generation of image sensor technology and addresses one of the great challenges facing our industry – how to capture crisp, clear digital images in a poorly lit environment.

With this kind of image sensor, both CCD and CMOS sensors can be used. This will be used with still cameras, phone cameras and other kinds of image capturing devices. So for short Kodak wants to revolutionize the image sensor market, we'll wait and see just how great the new technology is.
