Link Popularity and Pagerank

By: LangeEin

Link popularity is the essential measure of how many links pointing to your site and the quality of these links. Naturally,
the more links to your site, the more popular your site is. Note that link popularity is different from PageRank. PageRank is
Google's way of telling users how relevant the site is to their field and how important the area is generally.
Look around on sites that are similar to yours as a high ranking on search engines. Study them. Find out what they have that
you do not, and come as close to emulate them as possible without blatantly copy them (because this will do more harm than
good). In other words, find out what their strategy is the structure of their site, and the overall quality, and try to match
this quality, or even surpass it.
Obtaining links on sites that are popular is very important. When popular sites link to yours, it tells the search engines
that you worthy of ranking well for your keywords. Link Popularity is the 1 ranking factor in Google and Yahoo.
The most important thing you must understand when working with link popularity is that every page is treated as a separate
entity. This means that internal links that is links between the pages of your site, do count. Link popularity is not a
purely quantitative measurement. Instead the quality of links often counts more than the number of links. If you want to
rank high on certain keywords then you need the pages that link to your page to be related to those keywords. If the pages
linking to you are not related to your site's keywords then they will do little to raise your ranking for those keywords.
No links to your website are as important as links from the major directories like like Yahoo! and Open Directory. Also, you
should submit your site to as many of the smaller directories that are specific to your area of interest.
When looking for links to your site, don't just choose high PageRanked sites as your main linking strategy. The PageRank
benefit by an external link depends on the PageRank of the links page and on how many other links it has. For example, a link
from a page with low PageRank might be better than a link from a page with high PageRank if there are less total links on the
first page. Get links from sites that are relevant to your site and have good quality, regardless of their current PageRank.
By establishing reciprocal links with other high volume traffic web sites, you will get direct referral traffic from your
link partners web sites. The more web sites that link to you, the more quality targeted visitors you will get from your link
partners.
