Making Choices: Therapy or Surgery?

By: Jarda Dostal

As people grow old, they start to complain more of pains in their muscles and joints. They look like to become rigid up with age, and such routine activities as bending over for the morning paper can make them wince.

Such pain can grip so fiercely that they are sure it begins deep-seated in their bones. Nevertheless the real reason of stiffness and discomfort lies not in the joints or bones, relating to study at the Johns Hopkins Medical School, but in the muscles and connective tissues that move the joints.

The problem of inflexible joints and muscle groups is alike to the difficulty of opening and closing a gate because of a rarely used and rusty hinge that has turn into balky.

Thus, if people do not regularly be in motion their muscle groups and joints through their full ranges of motion, they lose some of their capability. That is why when these people will try to shift a joint after a long period of inactivity, they feel pain, and that discourages additional use

Let’s say you have osteoarthritis - probably the most common disorder of locomotors system. It is often treated with a surgical procedure to clean out debris in the joint, using a tiny scope inserted straight into the knee. But more and more researches point out fact that the surgery works, but no better than other treatments. Dr. Kalousek is a rheumatologist from Spa-resorts.cz says - surgery doesn't stop the arthritic process.

Interestingly American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) persuades patients to think about physical therapy as an effective non-surgical option for treatment of osteoarthritis.

Doctor Kalousek believes that beside therapeutic spa treatments everyone can protect joints from osteoarthritis or slow its progression simply by following suggestions:

-Reduce weight. Remember that every pound lost reduces the load exerted on the knee for each step by four pound. So become a healthy eater!

Being a healthy eater requires you to grow to be both educated and wise about what healthy consumption in fact is. Being foodstuff wise isn't about knowledge to calculate grams or extra fat, or is it about studying labels and counting energy.

Healthy eating is entirely about sensible and moderate consumption, consisting of healthy foods no less than 3 times daily. Healthy eaters eat numerous different kinds of meals, not limiting themselves to one definite food type or food group.

-Get active. Exercise strengthens the muscles around joints, which can prevent cartilage from wearing down.

-Stay straight. Good posture protects the neck, back, hip and knee joints.

-Don't stay immobile when sitting. Switching positions can decrease joint and muscle stiffness.

-Lift cautiously. Use your strongest & biggest joints and muscles when lifting or carrying to avoid straining smaller joints.

-Take a rest. Rest between phases of heavy activity to prevent repetitive stress on joints that can accelerate wear and tear.

In other words non-surgical therapy is a good alternative of surgical operation for many patients!
