Making Positive Crime Doesn't Pay

By: Santa Monica

It's laborious on behalf of me to think about employment that is a lot of frustrating nowadays than that of a
local cop.
Day in and day out, native cops and sheriff's deputies lay their lives on the
line in an attempt to bring criminals to justice. However, shortly once they bring about these
punks to the jailhouse, the lawbreakers are out on the streets again, liberal to commit
even more heinous crimes. It seems that a lot of of nowadays's lawbreakers are nothing
more than career criminals. You and I, as taxpayers, foot the bill for their care and
feeding a lot of of the time. And for that investment, what do we have a tendency to get? Additional crime,
additional frustration, additional burned-out cops.
However Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County Arizona believes he contains a higher way. And
for his crime-fighting efforts, he is re-elected time and time again.
What is the secret of Sheriff Joe's success? To put it bluntly, he treats criminals like
criminals. The convicts in his charge lose the valuable privileges they may have at
alternative correctional institutions.
For instance, they have no right to smoke. They have no right to read pornographic
magazines. They need no write to bulk themselves up with state-of-the-art
weightlifting equipment. And they need no right to determine "R" movies within the cellblocks.
Oh--and they need to pay for his or her meals--just like the rest of us do. Surprising?
Maybe. But I say it is a good shock to the system, one that simply may reduce the
repeat offender rate.
The sheriff's inmates are required to work on county and city comes, providing
local governments with no-value labor. Interestingly enough, Sheriff Joe even started
chain gangs for ladies so he wouldn't be sued for discrimination.
Initially, he eliminated cable TV from jail, till he discovered there was a federal
court order to require it. When he hooked up the cable again, he only permitted 2
stations: Disney and the Weather Channel. Cruel and unusual punishment?
Hardly. That is the type of punishment you'd offer your seventeen-year-recent for
refusing to mow the lawn.
The sheriff even went so far as to purchase the Newt Gingrich lecture series, that
he plays in the jails. When a reporter asked him if he had a lecture series by a
Democrat, he noted that a Democratic lecture series would possibly make a case for why many of the
inmates where in jail in the first place.
When inmates complained once the sheriff took away their occasional (that has no
nutritional price), he responded, "This isn't the Ritz-Carlton. If you don't prefer it,
don't return back."
Convicts are kinsmen and they need to be treated with dignity. But,
the actual fact of the matter is they have broken the law and several of them have very little
respect for law enforcement officers, their own grandmothers, and even themselves.
Criminals do not would like coddling. They have discipline. If their oldsters or caregivers
failed to supply it when they were young, it's up to folks like Sheriff Joe to produce
it in the best way he is aware of how.
Liberals could cringe at the sheriff's tent city jails, however the accommodations are
actually no worse than what our brave fighting men and girls face in Iraq and
different hot spots around the world. Sheriff Joe issued his own fighting words when
he said, "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our troopers reside in tents too, and they
should wear full battle gear, however they did not commit any crimes, thus shut your
damned mouths!"
We need a lot of Sheriff Joes--jail keepers who aren't afraid to run their jails like,
well, jails. To make a criminal understand the severity of his actions...to create him
see that solely misery awaits him if he violates the law again...is actually the
responsible, loving factor to do.
True, it's robust love--but typically that is the sole kind of affection that works.
