New To Webdesign

By: nileckron

Designing a website takes time as one would first have to know exactly how their layout (look, feel, and accessability/positioning) would look ahead of time. If in the event someone with very little to no experience were to create a website, they would be faced with major change after major change that may include re-designing almost every aspect of links, text, buttons, banners, colors, and images, which takes a fair amount of time. We must also consider that most websites are designed for growth, and would have no other option but to expand/grow larger, and require higher editorial than previously estimated, that is if new content is added regularly.

Website content is a crucial and highly misunderstood aspect for a moderate percentage of those with little to no experience.
Main content would be the body of the page (text/information of the page) which is usually not written according to proper SEO, which we will discuss later (insha Allah).
Secondary content may include links, buttons, banner, backgrounds, which can be just as important, while not quite there and mainly used for friendlyness to the human eye. If your visitors have a difficult time reading/seeing your test/links, and/or the colors are too bright, do not match and possibly hurt their eyes, the chances of them not returning to your website (even if it contains grade A content) are noticable.
Links (the text that you click on in order to get to another webpage/website) should contain one to three keywords or keyphrases that you have used in the title of the page that the link would leed your visitors to. Avoiding the use of the default colors for active links, and visited links should always be taken into consideration because it may be seen as dull and unappealing by the general population (being most of humanity). The text in your links should be descriptive (your visitors must have a slight idea of where they will be taken), while not exceeding 60 characters in length (including spaces) - the following contained partial SEO technigues -
Almost all websites require colors that compliment one another, a logo or banner (so that the website is not completely plain), and in some cases, buttons. Nowadays graphical buttons are no longer what they used to be, as they were gladly replaced by CSS (cascading style sheets) buttons, which look better, load faster, and appear far more appealing to the general population.

Type of servers

Windows Server - Windows servers are generally used to host ASP. The following file names are the same file under Windows - MyTextDocument.txt, My text Document.txt, my Text DOcument.txt.
Linux Server - Linux servers are generally used to host PHP. The following file names are different files under Linux - MyTextDocument.txt, My text Document.txt, my Text DOcument.txt. Linux considers a Capital letter or an extra space in the file name to distinguish one file from another. There for it is best to remember that hosting your website on a Linux Server, would mean that you would have to be careful with how you save your file names, as if you were to save one as Index.html and then point to index.html on a link inside another html file, the page would not be found and your visitor would see a 404 error page in return. Linux hosting is commonly cheaper (more affordable) compared to windows hosting.
When choosing which Operating System you would prefer your website to be hosted on, please check the options offered with each, and decide which would best suit your needs. There is very little, to no consern ragarding security issues when choosing a server. Security mainly depends on your host, not on your Operating System, but while the following is very accurate, i personally prefer Linux (as long as it's not RedHat)

Most Common Mistakes

Spaces in file names - One should avoid namig files with spaces, for example - salam alaykum.html - is an incorrect and at times very problematic common mistake, which can be fixed by using "-", for example - salam-alaykum.html - would repair the problem, as "-" is seen as a space by search engines.
Adding forward slash at the end of links - Adding a forward slash at the end of a link/file may tell search engines that the file is in actuality a directory, and if the directory can not be found, the visitor to your website would receive an error. Example - index.html/ would leed to a directory, and not to your main home page. To avoid this, simply do not add a forward or even a backward slash at the end of the names of your links within your source code. To correct the problem, simply use "index.html" without a slash, as if there is a need for one to separate a directory, it would be stated - http://www.whyislamisthetruth.com/QuranRecitation_A/ , while even for this there is no need, as if a name does not contain an extension, it is considered as a directory, there for it would be best to not use a slash at the end of both files names and directories, unless we are to point to a direct file within a directory - http://www.whyislamisthetruth.com/QuranRecitation_A/files/001_ghamdi_fatiha.mp3 . As you can see, this time there was a need to add a forward slash to signify that we are pointing to a directory within a directory, and then a file within the second directory. To make matters simpler, i will show you right versus wrong as not to confuse.

Right: http://www.whyislamisthetruth.com
Wrong: http://www.whyislamisthetruth.com/

Right: http://www.whyislamisthetruth.com/QuranRecitation_A

We have completed covering the most basic information. Later on I will continue with the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) section (insha Allah), as it is the most important factor for any and all websites that are to survive a long time, instead of receiving very few (under 100) to none (absolute zero) visitors. I must point out that receiving 50 to 100 visitors per month for the first one to three months is at times expected, and difficult to avoid. Later on, as a website develops, content grows, and it has been optimized for search engines, will your website receive a large number of visitors. Do not be discouraged. Continue, take brakes that last an hour, a day, a week, and even a month, if you have worked too hard on your website. You must understand that most people can not create original and unique content on a daily basis, nor can everyone add one page per day to their website.
