It is the mode of expression that tells about the mental state of the painter or the artist. There are a number of forms of paintings categorized as representational and naturalistic. The painting Mona Lisa by the famous painter Leonardo Da Vinci of Italy is regarded as one of the most recognizable artistic paintings of the world at present. Talking about the painting media, then we have a variety of pigments to paint with like oil, pastel, acrylic, watercolors, ink, hot wax, fresco, gouache, enamel, spray paint, tempera, water miscible oil paints, charcoal etc. Each of them produce different textures when used over the canvas and produce beautiful paintings. Some of them are fast drying like water colors and few take comparatively longer periods for drying like the oil paints. There is also variety in the styles of paintings that can refer to the separate visual objects, methods and techniques that tell about the work of an individual artist and also on the other hand, denote the school or the movement to which the artist is associated with. These painting styles are modernism, impressionism, abstract styles, photorealism, surrealism and many others.

Some of the idioms associated with the word painting are allegory, bodegon, body painting, figure painting, illustration painting, landscape painting, portrait painting, still life and veduta. Each one of them has a different meaning and denotes different style and type of painting. Painting has flourished as an art in almost every corner of the world.
