Resident Evil 4 Film Review

By: johnny qualsoon

I just saw the new Resident Evil 4 movie in the movie house yestarday. I realize the first thing everyone wants to find out will be "is that 3D well worth the extra cost?". In a word indeed. I experienced a bit of difficulty adapting to it (the way I see colors is a little different from 'normal' vision) but about 20 mins in I had my focus and completely appreciated the movie.

There are a considerable amount of the corny classic 3 D effects (oh look another dagger, arrow or what ever was thrown straight into the screen for no evident reason...) in the movie. However what definitely tips the weighing scales is the amount of of the standard things is in 3D. Just about every scene in the film (even the beginning credits!) includes a number of 3D features to it, plus the backgrounds are simply amazing. Most of the time I felt just like I was really on the other side of the screen watching the story happen.

That brings me to the story. Fans of the original games already know; the movies are an universe onto themselves, keeping some personas and locales yet making a completely brand-new story. Anybody that has not played the game titles will be left thinking what is going on from time to time. The executioner is the sort of figure who adds nothing into the plot of this Resident Evil 4 movie, however fans will appreciate the nod in our direction.

Normally the story is foreseeable since it follows the same pattern as the first three but it's rather excellent. Before the 2nd half you already know who'll pull through and who will be zombie fodder. There is some good character development with the primary pro antagonists, a little bit less with the supporting characters, and none with the zombie fodder. Yet, you know whom they are so you don't really care.

The visuals are fantastic. It is all been done before but it's still aesthetically captivating. The airplane-exploding-in-slow-motion scene is excellent; among my own favorites next to the beach scene. Again, the 3D is really worth the price and in these kinds of situations necessary to fully value the beauty of the filming. The gore wasn't very over-the-top but I definitely understand the R rating. Older teenagers (or whoever has played the games) should be able to cope with it though.

If you liked the 1st three movies you are going to definitely like this Resident Evil 4 movie. And if you haven't seen them, but like action movies, you'll still enjoy it.
