Reviewing The Barska Finger Print Safe

By: Mack Krasen

The dimensions of this Barska safe are 14 in x 7in x 16in. It is quite big enough to keep jewelry, prescription drugs, important legal papers, or, the more typical - guns.

It goes without mentioning, that since this is a biometric safe it can be simply opened with the touch of your finger - whether it be yours, your wifes' or some one else's. Like most biometric safes this models hold up to 30 fingerprints in it's memory. This means you do not have to look for keys or try and remember (and enter) the combination. Merely "touch and go". It's memory runs on 4 AA batteries.

Now you may be thinking, what if it doesn't detect my fingerprint, or if the batteries die? How would I get into it? Well, this manufacturer doesn't give the details of failure rates, but assuming it is the same as other fingerprint safe manufacturers, its fall rate would be much much less than 1%.

Fear not. The biometric safe comes with special keys that let you to get into the safe even in the event that there is a malfunction with the electronics.

Sturdily built, it weighs in at around 30lbs. The door contains a lot of this weight. It comes with pre-drilled holes so that it can be easily mounted in a wall or attached to a closet shelf. The owner can also easily double bolt it by mounting it to a shelf and the wall behind.

To complete this review lets tally the good and the bad. Up to 30 fingerprints can be stored in this advanced fingerprint safe. This means not only yourself but also your wife or even kids can have access if this is needed, and each can input several different prints. You can do this by positioning your finger a little bit differently every time you store a print. That means you will have less problems and will get the safe opened quicker if you have these multiple prints of your own stored in its memory. If you had just one print stored, you'd have to place your finger almost identically every time you open it. By having multiple fingerprints stored, you are allowing for variations in finger placement when touching it.

Some fingerprint safes are purchased without knowing the full details of it. Barska does away with this by publishing the owner manual online so you can read it first and know what you are getting into. You can learn how to do everything you need before you ever buy. This instills confidence in your purchase. This Barska finger print safe is one of the best combinations of price and quality safes that are on the market today. When this was written, in January 2001, you could get one for less than $200.

The following aren't true disadvantages, but simply things consumers should know. The door contains a majority of the metal, being that it's the point of entry. While built sturdily, the sides of the fingerprint safe can be broken open if someone had the right tools. This is a reason to mount any kind of safe. Mounting a fingerprint safe doesn't allow it to be lifted and taken. When shutting the door you need to push the "wake up " button, next to the fingerprint scanner, and hold down for a few seconds. This way you know the door shuts correctly. No different than other biometric safes, but only having one print in the safes memory could mean you would need to reposition your finger to get the correct reading when opening.

In summary, the fingerprint safe by Barska is very popular and well liked by those who have purchased one. They are of high quality and carry the reputation of Barska who are known for their great quality sport optics found in binoculars.
